  1. Nope. on Is UNIX An OS? · · Score: 1

This was written by a Mac user, and he goes on to claim that "Apple is creating an entire operating system." (Based on Unix, too.)

The author's point is that the OS is whatever makes the computer usable and useful to the user.

  2. Wrong quote. on Microsoft Loses · · Score: 1

Despite a half-dozen previews, I managed not to read that quote very well. Of course switching completely off the PC platform would tend to be expensive (unless we're talking iMacs and the new "Internet appliances," I guess). Here's a more applicable quote:

"This [applications] barrier ensures that no Intel-compatible PC operating system other than Windows can attract significant consumer demand...."

    (emphasis mine)

  3. But look at what was said about the community.... on Microsoft Loses · · Score: 1

"[T]here are currently no products - and that there are not likely to be any in the near future - that a significant percentage of computer users worldwide could substitute for Intel-compatible PC operating systems without incurring substantial costs. Findings 18-29"

  4. Re: Problem with random meta-moderation on Moderation Ideas · · Score: 1

I definitely agree that random M2 would be a problem. Much to my surprise, I've gotten to M2 a number of times now. If I didn't see that link at the top of the front page, I don't think Slashdot would get my contribution, because I usually don't read the comments on many of the stories, only stories that especially interest me.

  5. Re:Which MS is on trial? on Close out to Microsoft Anti-Trust Case · · Score: 1

    Off-topic, but anyway ....

"A free market is what our laws define it to be."

Not if it is a true free market. A free market can only be called free to the extent that it is not regulated. Forget about anti-monopoly laws and simply make stuff good enough that it succeeds.

Open standards are good, but non-voluntary compliance??

  6. Make up and down separate, perhaps on More Moderation Madness · · Score: 1

A relatively simple idea: Moderators could get separate points for raising and lowering the score of messages. Say, 2 points for marking things down and 3 for marking up. Or the same thing, but with, as others have suggested, a dynamic number of points depending on how many comments have been posted.
