They want to allow for authorization cards to be recognized as a valid alternative.
Which means that instead of being pressured by my employer I'll be pressured by my pro-union co-workers instead. How is that any better? What if I don't want a union? Instead of being able to vote my conscience in secret without outside intimidation I'm now forced to get into an argument with the pro-union co-workers and explain why I don't want a union.
Getting rid of the secret ballot serves no purpose other than to shift the source of intimidation to a different group. If your argument is that it's hard to run a secret ballot election then let's pass some legislation that provides a mechanism to do this -- perhaps the NLRB could run them? -- shifting the intimidation from the employer to the union solves nothing.
Random quarrels happen among people in life, and sometimes people lash out in anger. If someone's going to lash out in anger
How many otherwise normal people lash out in anger with deadly-force? I've lost my cool a number of times and yet my body count stands at zero. Normal well-adjusted individuals do not "lash out" and murder people. The individual in this case had serious mental problems and I'd blame the system for failing him more than I'd blame the tool that he used.
rather than being shot dead for disrespectin' da hood.
The NRA likes to pretend that just having the piece in your trousers will make you into Rambo or somesuch
Where does the NRA say that?
Being CAPABLE and equipped. That includes "situational awareness" which makes you less shocked when the shot is finally fired.
"Situational awareness" is the most important part of self-defense, armed or unarmed. Properly practiced it will allow you to avoid most situations and to respond accordingly when a situation can't be avoided. If you let your guard down and get surprised by some asshat you are probably screwed regardless of how well armed you are.
The classroom is already scared shitless at this point but some dude's being a hero and makes a move *BANG!* not anymore.
That scared shitless sheep like attitude is the problem. If you are likely to die anyway are you going to take it laying down or stand up and try to do something about it? Even being completely unarmed against someone with a handgun there are things you could do -- pick up a chair and throw it at him, two or more people rush him at the same time, etc, etc. The mere possession of a firearm does not grant someone a real life version of "god mode". Jesus, this dirtbag killed over a dozen people. If nothing else, it's a safe bet he had to reload at some point.
I don't know about you but I'd rather get shot having at least tried to defend myself and others than get shot cowering under a desk and pleading for my life. Perhaps if more people had this attitude disturbed individuals like this wouldn't manage to rack up such high body counts when they snap?
Take a look at Flight 93 or the recent church shooting to see what happens when people don't meekly accept death and decide to fight back. The actions of a small number of individuals in both cases saved lives.
I'm sure you could compare like-for-like between these jurisdictions and ones where guns are common.
Actually it's not that easy to do those comparisons. Russia has fewer guns available than the United States but four or five times as many murders. Clearly guns aren't the driving force and socio-economic factors are more important. Most of the jurisdictions where the cops and/or citizenry don't have guns are well developed nations with substantial social-safety nets. So again, is it the lack of guns or socio-economic factors that keep crime down?
If the man hadn't had a gun available, he might have calmed down before he managed to get one
Umm, have you ever been angry in your life? Did you express that anger by murdering a dozen or so people? If no, did you not murder people because you knew it was wrong or because you couldn't get access to the tools to do the job?
We don't have to choose between stopping people from wanting to kill people and eradicating tools used to kill people
So, you gonna eradicate baseball bats, knives, rope and rocks too?
There is a real trend between families who collect lethal weapons and the children of those families using them in an appalling fashion
If you are going to make a claim like that you ought to back it up with some actual citations. I could point out a few school shootings that occurred in the US where the families had zero firearms in the house and the individuals in question got them through other means.
Perhaps more care needs to be taken with monitoring families with a tendencies to collect lethal weapons than monitoring children who play with digital weapons.
Monitoring by whom? Government? Do you surrender all the other rights you usually have in a Western Country (including the right not to talk to the police or let them into your house) just because you own firearms?
It basically shows that the guy running the police force isn't smart enough to reason properly about simple casual relationships.
Or that he is smart enough to reason -- he reasons that manufactured outrage will win him votes when the next election rolls around. I don't know if police officials are elected in Germany or not but this would be the first thing that comes to mind if it was happening here in the US.
Golf is a waste of arable urban land. Food security is the new domestic security priority.
Huh? Food security is the one thing that the United States actually has. What makes you think that golf courses are a problem? By that line of reasoning any activity that takes up a fair amount of land (gun/archery ranges, racing tracks, sports stadiums, cemeteries, camping grounds, etc) is suspect.
Many, many years ago I had a couple of guys from the FBI come "incognito" to our first 2600 meeting and they WERE talking about using space in BIOS as malware(we're talking 1993-ish, IIRC). Why they thought we wouldn't notice them I have no idea since they stuck out like sore thumbs.
They must have gone to the wrong 2600 meeting. I don't know how you guys do it but at our 2600 meetings practically everybody has a handgun and communications equipment;)
Main SeaWater Pump. It pumps sea water through the main turbine condensers. It pumps a LOT of seawater....
Ah. In the back of my mind I knew that pump existed but wasn't familiar with the terminology. Should have pegged it from the sound isolation comment above. Thanks for clarifying:)
Didn't think so;) I have my own civilian assumptions that are probably incorrect but it sure is fun to speculate nonetheless. I wanted to join the Navy back in the day with an eye towards the Silent Service but my medical history (epilepsy) precluded it. My loss I think:(
Thanks for all you did for us/are currently doing (you still active?)
Am I going to show my ignorance of naval engineering if I ask what the MSW pump is? I'd also be curious to know (although not at all surprised if you can't answer) if we can operate our naval reactors on convection cooling throughout the whole operating range or only at lower power outputs/speeds?
As to ohter peoples suggestions that diesel boats are quieter try doing a wargame with them and having them call time out to recharge
They get to call a time out to recharge? How is that remotely close to real war conditions? I hope I'm not going out on a limb with my assumption that we wouldn't offer our adversaries with diesel-electric subs time outs to recharge their batteries during an actual shooting war.....
Last I checked, in the English language, at least, when we say "a million", we usually don't mean a literal million. That's what "one million" is for. "A million" tends to just mean "a hell of a lot".
That sound you are hearing is the noise of a million whooshes flying right over your head;)
Lil touchy aren't we? He called himself an "extreme leftist" and then mocked "libertarian talking points". Figured it was only fair if we had the chance to mock some of his talking points.
actually attack a specific agenda item with a valid argument
Throw out some of your agenda items and we'll be happy to do that;)
And being a few-thousand-dollar tax cheat is nothing compared to being a war profiteering traitor who selectively censored intelligence information from the president and congress to get a war started, a war said president was all too happy to go along with because "that bad guy attacked my dad." (cheney)
Ah, rationalization by pointing out how bad the other guy is. Another time-honored tactic from the Republican/Democratic playbook.
Secret ballot is vital to our system. It allows people to vote without ANY outside influence. People can vote their minds and not their peer pressures. Secret ballot removes outside influence on votes.
That must be why the labor unions want to get rid of them.
Nice try. As an extreme leftist, I can assure you, Slashdot as a whole is nowhere near liberal. We've got more Libertarians here than anything... It's a pity, really. So many intelligent people here, yet they cling to a backwards ideology, with lunatics at the help... It's sad. Don't get me wrong, I think Libertarians have some great ideas - they just seem intent on speaking the loudest about the piss poor ones they have. Every time I see a Libertarian on/. parrot another stupid talking point, I die a little inside.
Please, parrot some of your extreme leftist talking points;)
it could have been TomTom, not MS, that shot first.
There's a bit of a difference between notifying someone and filing a lawsuit. If Microsoft is infringing on their patents what else should they have done? You can't ignore it. Personally I'd rather receive a letter in that situation than a summons. Maybe that's just me....
They want to allow for authorization cards to be recognized as a valid alternative.

The real solution would be just to completely outlaw handguns for people who aren't police or military
Cuz I much prefer being shot with a shotgun by some deranged individual than being shot with a 9mm ;)
If the man hadn't had a gun available, he might have calmed down before he managed to get one

preinstalled, on ASUS boards: it was the BIOS itself. It too survived hard disk wipes, but it didn't survive my sledgehammer.
Real men murder shitty ASUS boards with a 12 gauge ;)

If you think the Democrats are immune to fraud just wait a few years. They haven't been in power long enough yet to get as corrupt as the GOP was.

While I think what he did was wrong, in the scope of things it's not so bad.
Isn't it amazing how Democrats rationalize corruption in the exact same manner as Republicans?
Yes, we are pretty bad about the FOSS thing - but I'm willing to let that slide.
FOSS sucks and is destroying America! Support American workers and buy Microsoft!
There, I made us fair and balanced ;)
