  1. Re:not stealing on DirecTV's Secret War On Hackers · · Score: 1

With DeCSS I paid for the signal and it is illegal for me to decode it myself.

With DirecTV the hackers have not paid for the signal and they have been techincally outsmarted by the company.

Ok, DTV will only show the local stations that broadcast in my area. There are another 40 markets being broadcast by the sattelite, but I can only get *my* locals.

Now, I like to time shift. I live on the west coast. If I could get a NY station, I could watch primetime at 6pm. Way cool.

So, I pay for direct tv. But they are only letting me see a subset of the data (akin to CSS). SO, I "hack" the system to let me see all the data when I want where I want.

    Anything wrong with that?

Except notice that the TiVo uses a PowerPC processor. The motherboard and attached chips are clearly a one-off design for TiVo and not a leverage of existing hardware.

Clearly, TiVo is leveraging the linux OS. Same argument, but different component.

You do need to store the CC# if you do periodic billing (think subscription).

Not all online sites are just a catalog.

  4. Re:fidonet! on A Little Bit Of BBS Nostalgia · · Score: 1

Yikes, you were one of the guys that hammered my gateway.

I operated a fidonetusenet gateway in the Houston area around 1990-1992. I pulled a nearly complete newsfeed from the University of Houston (no binaries) and distributed them to fidonet nodes in the area. It was quite a challenge. I had no users directly on my "bbs" -- I just did the gatewaying for others.

I was running 2 9600bps modems, a 386-40 with 4mb of ram, and a about 100mb of RLL disk. At first I was running DesqView, then did a quick fling with DesqView/X and finally switched to OS/2. I'd regularly steal one of the lines to play Tradewars and Risk.

A full feed wasn't all that large at the time. But those people that did ftp-by-mail really hosed my system.
