  1. The pink elephant is (warning: flamebait) on How Would You Refocus Linux Development? · · Score: 1

    GUI coherence and ease of configuration are the list toppers.

    Most alpha geeks already get it, and know about the pink elephant in the room: Mac OS X is the fabled the "BSD Desktop Platform" for those reasons alone.

    <flamebait>
    Until there are "Linux Human Interface Guidelines" (LHIG) handed down from a working group, wielding Nazi-like powers across all distros (be they powers of rating, or powers of recommendation)*, Linux will be where it is today: running in Parallels on Macs, performing tirelessly in the basements of corporate datacenters, or hosting websites run by ISVs and ISPs (and even that is being threatened by IIS in the current trends at Netcraft).

    Next year, or the year after that, in perpetuity; none of them the "year of the Linux deskop." Each year will deliver more powerful, feature-rich, iterations of Mac OS X sporting a visually coherent interface that "just works."

    * Rating: 0-5 stars for adherence to the "LHIG"; or "Recommended for general use, by your mother." Shame the creators of the software to follow the guidelines and end the renegade engineering mindset that "an engineer can design an interface." They can't. Look at how Java engineers fucked up the view (in MVC) in JSF by appropriating DOM and HTML attributes for their component backend.

  2. Re:Vim on Is DVORAK Gaining Traction Among Coders? · · Score: 1

    I never understood this excuse; a weak excuse on all fronts. What you want to tell us: your real problem is that you are a slave to hunt-and-peck.

    As a "slave to Vim" myself, and one that has been using Dvorak since 1996, I can say, "Just start using Dvorak." The J key still moves down, K still move up, H left, L right... you just different fingers and reaches to do it. I can promise you Vim doesn't give a hoot about your keymap. All your Vim experience remains directly applicable.

    Dvorak Tip from a veteran: dump hunt and peck habits by keeping your QWERTY keycaps and typing with a Dvorak keymap . Keep a Dvorak keymap printout near your desk for hints, or pick up Mavis Beacon (MB). MB runs on Mac and PC; sorry Linux crowd, you'll need a good typing tutor. MB will help you with reaches and you will begin to see immediate benefits, while picking up touch-typing habits...you can't cheat and look at your keyboard because the keycaps will be useless! Bwahahahahaha!

    I'm German, and I've never heard of anything like that. Misdemeanor fines are fixed, only criminal fines vary with income because they are based on converting a (virtual, unless the fine is not paid) jail sentence into the amount of money the offender loses by not being able to work during that time.

    I stand corrected -brazil-. However, I do stand by my original post as I recalled the History Channel story.

    I recall that the fine was astronomical compared to fines for the same offenses in the US, it it was based on the wealth, maybe the income, of the driver. I do not recall any virtual jail time being mentioned, but that could easily be based on the omission, intentional?, of the reporter to increase shock value for viewers in the US. It was a very detailed story, following Autobaun police and traffic monitors. The tailgating "traps" were particularly fascinating as I have never seen anything like it in the US on our Interstates.

    I know that Germany fines certain speeders on the Autobaun based on wealth. I saw this on the History Channel. One cop cited fining a particularly wealthly driver some number in the thousands of dollars (US). I think it was for tailgating! I just recall it jaw drop shocking to me and my wife. Let's see... 10% of 50 billion... "5 billion dollars! bwahahahahahahahahaha!"

  5. IBM's ImageUltra on Experiences w/ Drive Imaging Software? · · Score: 1

    The sales literature "wow'd" me.

    Hardware Independent. Allows one to define say, "Windows 2000 Sales Force Configuration". Slices out applications and drivers from OS and libraries them. Hence, new hardware comes in, 10 IBM ThinkPads, 15 Dell Dimensions, 10 ThinkVistas. Each has different NICs, modems, USB, etc.

    ImageUltra "slipstreams" the drivers and applications based on hardware configuration. One image, multiple hardware.

    I recall being very impressed at a demo. I think it was limited to IBM hardware at the time, but it was being licensed, in fact, it may be the basis for PowerQuest's product. ImageUltra is free for use on IBM hardware (of course), nominal licensing for non-IBM hardware if I recall as well. There is an enterprise product too, ImageUltra Builder.
