  1. Re:Security Category in Gmail Bugs List? on Gmail Messages Are Vulnerable To Interception · · Score: 1

This is a little disconcerting, but gmail is still an invite-only beta. No system should be considered secure or trustworthy until it is finished. Betas exist to find problems like this. I realized that gmail is an extremely attractive service, which can make it hard not to use it as a primary email box. However, a beta should never be relied on. Maybe we are spoiled or have high expecations because Google puts out quality products, so we expect more of them, even their betas. Just keep in mind that betas offer no guarantees of any kind. In fact, finding this weakness does a great service to Google and its users. The final, finished product will be that much better thanks to this glitch.

I definitely had the same experience with Thief...it really was immersive. Ever wish you had that visibility meter or find yourself uneasy when walking on tile. I realize I didn't have any moss arrows, but I just really wanted carpeting to walk on. My first (and weirdest) experience with letting a long gaming session intrude on real life was when I first got Ultima V for my AppleIIc when I was 10 or so. I got it just before Thanksgiving, and played in an unhealthy amount each day. When I sat down to Thanksgiving I found myself visualizing the "T" on the keyboard when I wanted to add something to the conversation, needing the "G" key to get food on the table, and seeing the "I" key when I wanted to know what I already had on my plate. It didn't last long, but was very weird.

Hasn't anyone ever heard that you rise to the level of your incompetence? Meaning, you are promoted until you are in a position that you can barely handle. Any more responsibility or complexity, and the job becomes beyond one's capabilities. In this case, these managers often just spend all their time preventing their manager(s) from finding out that they are in over their head. I have had 2 managers like this. One was eventually moved in what was supposedly a lateral move, but was actually a demotion, as he was given a position in which he no longer managed people. The other was laid off in the dot-com meltdown, like everyone else. The second guy I give credit, he was really incompetent, and awful to work for, but he spent so much time covering his ass that I had plenty of time to work on whatever I wanted and do what the company actually needed me to do, rather than working on what he thought the company needed me to do. In case he reads slashdot and recognizes me, my current manager is awesome. Really...I'm not sucking up. I have a lot of freedom to learn lots of stuff now, and I love it.
