A lot of people aren't aware if this, but there is a superior instrument now available to communicate even more efficiently with others than E-mail or IM: it's called a TELEPHONE. I have to repsond to sales inquiries at times, and what could be accomplished in a two minute phone call can take two hours (with typical interruptions) to convey by E-mail... Now, I don't type at 100 WPM, but it kills me when people "hide" behind a keyboard all day. You can also get a lot of other important cues from listening to the other persons voice that you simply miss in IM or E-mail.
