  1. Does this really make sense? on Miguel Says Unix Sucks! · · Score: 1

Okay, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I always saw linux as a unix clone.. now okay if Linux is a Unix clone then basically isn't this guy saying that Linux sucks and all Unix LIKE OS's suck? e.g FreeBSD (well all varients of BSD), SCO, and everything else out there that is Unix like sucks, since Linux and all of the mix that has created flame wars out there is pretty much copied from the exact same thing, AT&T Unix.

Guys, this will probably get moderated into the dirt and have me coming up with a -4 score, but I honestly see IPv4 as the metric system in America, how long now as the US been switching the the Metric system? 50 years? I think we're looking at the same with IPv6.. everyone is talking about how great it's going to be, and how wonderful all these new features are going to be.. but honestly if you look at ALL the servers all the everything on the internet that's using IPv4 (well.. lol that IS everything) for us to have to stop all that and change to different protocols and stuff, it isn't just going to happen anytime soon or at all.. I don't care if major companies DO jump on the IPv6 band wagon, I just don't see as becoming big as some people would like to see it happen.. of course this is coming from the mind of a 17 year old systems admin and I haven't been in the field that long so who am I to say that? but thats just my .02.

I think this could be a serious issue. Because the way technology is moving these days with computers doing most of the work that at one time humans had to do. Who knows what computers are controling at these plants? Whats if a computer is controling the core of the reactor? I think we might have a serious accident when Y2K comes. Also there will be many people with out power when Y2K comes. This is a concern because it will be in the middle on winter, people with out power will be in a serious situation. I think that its easy for some people to huff this off as "Whats the big deal?" but it would be a big deal in the middle of winter. But think about it..its in the middle of august, why would you care if your power went out? Also most people don't get heat/anything else from a nuclear power plant (I know I don't). But I think that we will see many people with no heat/utils this winter or a nuclear meltdown, if these plants don't get Y2K under control.

  7. Re:Can Linux meet the needs of the mainstream user on Linux and the New Computing Order · · Score: 1

I think another point of my last post could be the fact of updateing the kernel. Assumeing that Linux does make it mainstream and some company makes it their standard..Okay great, but lets say the linux distro they include on their systems is 2.2.5, well a lot of new users to Linux don't know how to upgrade their kernel, yes reading material is avaiable to use this. But most people I know don't read such materials. They figure "I can do this on my own with no ones help or I can't do it at all" so then someone else comes along and shows them how to do it. So I think we will see [if linux gets mainstream] users with older kernels, that don't know how to upgrade them. Also with the way kernels are coming out these days some users might find themselves with developmental kernels which to a new user could cause them some data loss. Also look at the way kernels are coming these days, 2.0,2.1,2.2,2.3 and now theres talks of 2.4, I really think that kernels are coming out to soon now. So I think that one thing that in the end might hold linux back is kernels (also lib compatability).

Now I'm sure that comments will be made about what I just said with users with older kernels. The reason I see this as being a problem is that, like microsoft there is always someone out there finding problems and explioting those problems. So if a kernel say 2.2.4(just making something up) has a bug in it, well someone will expliot that user some time or another. That user might not know how to update to 2.2.10 (assumeing that has a bug fix). So we'll see that he becomes mad at Linux. Then is forced to either A) read and update or B) Buy a new version and reinstall
or C) I know some people who would just get fed up and go get another OS completely.

    Another bit of my .02

  8. Can Linux meet the needs of the mainstream user? on Linux and the New Computing Order · · Score: 2

I'm sure I'll get flamed to hell on this. But this is what I think.

I don't think that Linux CAN meet the needs of the mainstream users. Most end users when they get their PC don't want to have to have to learn commands, figure out short cuts. Then want to take it out of the box, plug it in and have it run. This is why windows has become the high focus OS that it is today, you don't have to learn commands. You just point, click, and the application runs, you don't have to compile applications and then compile it. I use UNIX in my daily life, on my home computers and at my place of work. But my use of UNIX didn't come in one day, with windows you can use it from day one no extra commands to learn, nothing to do really. UNIX is clearly the more stable OS, and for a server nothing is better. But you actually have to work to learn UNIX, its really not hard but you have to learn multiple commands and figure out HOW to use things at first if you don't know. Sure there is man pages and HOWTO's but end users with a new PC don't want to read all that, they want it to work right then with no waiting on how to figure out how to use it.

I'm sure you script kiddies out there will be all over me for this, but I hope the users of Slashdot with a brain can figure out where I'm coming from. I will probably get stuff like "WINDOWS SUCKS!! USE LINUX!! YOUR OS SUCKS!!". But come on guys, read what I had to say, and think about it for a minute.

    Thats just my .02.

Okay, Okay, I didn't mean to start a big load of stuff bringing out points of which operating envionment is better..I didn't come on here and say "LINUX IS GOD WINDOWS MUST DIE WOOO!" I simply stated that from what I've seen the general attitude of Slashdot users is mostly pointed twords linux/UNIX type operating envionments, I'm not saying which one is better. I think that Windows and Linux/UNIX are simply tools to get a job done. I don't think that bashing Windows or bashing UNIX is right..They both have features which make them useful to one user or another. I think really choosing an operating enviornment is a matter of personal preference. There is no "right" operating envionment, and a end user isn't wrong because he wants to use winodws. So my first post was simply saying that I thought that telling the slashdot polls that win2k was the far better operating envionment was a waste of time on a Linux/UNIX centered website. I'm not stating that I have a right to tell anyone anything. But what I posted was what I thought, and maybe I was wrong, maybe I wasn't.

  11. Re:Consumer choice on Taking a look forward: Linux 2.4 · · Score: 1

What was the point of that? Whats the point of coming to a Linux/UNIX centered website to promote windows? People that use Slashdot frequently don't care about windows, nor do they want to hear about windows..So whats the real point in talking about it? You won't change any ones mind or their thoughts on which operating environment they are going to use. So you more or less just wasted everyones time typing that out.
