AVG lets you turn off the Link Scanner. It's under Tools>Advanced Settings>Link Scanner. I just turned it off and browsing is definitely faster, especially when I hit the back button. This is especially noticeable with Flickr.
They obviously didn't consider the consequences. It's a nice idea, being able to scan links and see if they are safe, but it has its serious downside.
I trust that AVG will either turn the link scanner off by default or completely disable it very soon.
