Great manual focus auto exposure and program mode SLR. Its also a full metal not plastic camera with a smaller profile. I have two bodies and they are often on eBay for $125-175. The black version bodies are special. The FG is great for backpacking because of its size and weight.
The great thing about Nikons is the lens compatibility with older and newer Nikon lenses. I can use my older manual focusing lenses with my autofocus body and my autofocus lenses with my manual bodies (FG). Of course I don't have autofocus, but that is not needed in every situation. My point is there are some great values to be found with the older lenses and bodies and you don't have to throw them away to upgrade to a new body.
