    5. Hope that the person who got the password can log on to the logged ip externally.

Suddenly you can take a peek inside with not all that much effort ;)

Heck, if your victim use a website to generate his/her password, they might even fall for the username question ;)

My dell inspirion 8500 has worked with no problems for 11 months now... Being hauled a 30 minute walk in a backpack every day for 10 of those months i cant really under what this "Dell sucks" thing is all about...

Mine works, the only trouble i had was with the internal wlan card that has very limited support in linux, but then again, i have a box at home with xforwarding for that use, since *all* of the college software (EE) requires winXP.

The admins at this place even specifically said that they didnt want linux laptops on their networks since "it was only hackers who used it"...
Requiring IE to read the lecture notes is also very nice of them...

What exactly *is* the problem with dell computers... enlighten me please

Or, get a *real* ebanking system...

I live in norway and most net-banks here use both your "birth-number" *and* a "securitycard" to generate a key.

The key generated by the securitycard is never the same, and you need a 4 digit pin-code to even get it to generate a code. You type in the first 6 digits and hit "log in" and on the screen you get the last 2 digits, if these match with the ones on your "securitycard" you can be resonable sure that you are really talking with your bank.

Sniffing the password etc wont help you one bit, since it will only be active for a few minutes. After that, you need a new number to log in.

Steal the card? I would just call my bank and they would issue a new one, and put the other on the "watch list" someone try to log on with it: ups, their IP is logged and you have a trail for the police ;)

Another great thing about this way of doing it is that you can access your netbank anywhere and within a few minutes, any information logged by a keycatcher is invalid.

Cant say I use a live teller myself either, only when i pick up large packages since my bank is the same as the norwegian post-office ;)

I get one account, Visa, phone-banking and ebanking for 20 NOK per month. (about 3 dollars)
This works pretty well for me, not like i have to go out to pay bills ;)

95% of norwegian stores takes electronic payment in some form anyway, so you dont *need* cash for that. You can also withdraw money when paying in most grocerie stores too, just let the clerk know before setting up the transaction.
Thats how I do it, and most of my friends do too.

The ebanking system lets me do everything really.

    Check balance
    Pay bills
transfer money between my own accounts freely and instantly
View the payment history of all accounts as far back as I feel like
(Hmm, I paid for my laptop the 11th of october 03, nice to know) ;)
I could even apply for a mastercard thru the system, though i would have to stop by the bank to sign a form.

And to address the "Why this works in Europe" question:

Most people in norway at least use ATMs, cellphones and the internet on a daily basis.
My 74 year old grandmother sends text messages on her cellphone durn it ;)
You just have to learn things, and meet the technology with a certain degree of interest.
My grandmother discovered that she could get hold of me wherever I was for help with her digital-satdecoder using her cellphone, so that got her convinced ;) (nothing like doing sat-tv tech support for free when at a party ;) )

There are a few problems with switching to Linux.

My dell inspiron 8500 can run it just fine, but the software I have to use do not even run on XP without a special lpt driver (since the software is win3.11 based).
I have to run "Multisim" which has a rather annoying license system that tracks hardware and software changes making it a bit hard to fake-

And, running linux is a _lot_ more work than running winXP.
I have used linux on my server for about 2 years but it is still not _easy_.

Most users out there are simply dont have enough skills to use linux. In another post I just read, calling linux hard was apparently "Fud".
    Try this:
Person downloads rpm, clicks on it to install, gets a dependency error. Then what...
Many regular users cant even figure out winXP, how are you going to make them understand linux?

A problem i run into all the time is skilled people not wanting to help in any way and just saying "Rtfm" or "stfw".
This is not the way to get people interested in linux ;)

Linux is nice for a lot of things, but there is still a bit of ground to cover. And most people are not getting smarter or any less lazy ;)

Well, CD prices are not that low everywhere. In Norway where I live, the price for a single cd is 189 NOK. Change the currancy and you get aprox 30 USD. Would _you_ pay that much for a CD when you can "rip" it off the net for free? It is illegal, but the chance of getting busted is _very_ low here. And another problem is the stores selection. The music I want to buy isnt even available, most they would have to order and that jacks the price up to 40-50 bucks for a single album, more if it is a 2cd album. I could pay a months ADSL for one of those... For those that still dont know why I dont buy music add to it that I get aprox 900 bucks paid out every month, 475 goes to rent and inet, and food in norway is _expensive_. The day I can download music for .99 here in norway, I might actually do that... On a side note, paying 90$ for a computergame wont happen either... though I still play my good ol colonization more than most of the new stuff ;)
