  1. Get some real power. on Building a Render Farm? · · Score: 1

The best price/power processor is the G5. Right now it is only available in a tower with non-ECC RAM. The good part is the RAM they use is actually very good quality and from the testing we've done there has been very few errors. Hopefully we'll see G5 xserves show up at macworld in january. The best part is apple has one of the best storage solutions available with the xserve raid. About middle of the pack as far as cost, but with top-end performance and integrity. There is no need to bother trying linux on a G5 box, OSX gets great rendering performance for both shake and maya. BTW, qmaster works on standard G5 towers, not just xserves.

  2. Not pretty but.. on Cooling the Server Room? · · Score: 5, Interesting

one of the best solutions I have seen was at a local isp. They ran copper tubing just above the ceiling (hidden by the foam tiles) in a switchback layout similar to a radiator. They had a small pump just outside that moved water through both the internal and external radiators. It worked quite well and lowered the temperature in their main room by 20 degrees. Wasn't the prettiest thing with the tubing on the outside, but I'm sure you can find a way to hide it.

  4. Teaching tools on SQL Vs. Access for Learning Database Concepts? · · Score: 1

Either would be fine for teaching about the concepts that make a datbase what it is. The problem with most computer instruction is the various versions of the program being taught. Because many are going to be on a budget you will see everything from Access 97 to 2003 (hopefully none older than that). With sql you can have all students on one free platform (mysql) and they can take home notes that make sense.

Do you remember those guards that you saw at the beginning with the moving red light where we think eyes should be? Those are cylons. There are 12 models of human imitation cylons, we have been introduced to 4 of them so far. The rest of the cylons have the knight rider eyes (including the cylon fighters it seems).

  7. Consoles or computers? on PS3 Chip Trials Set To Begin · · Score: 0, Troll

All of the next generation consoles are using some derivitive of the IBM powerpc technology. With the kind of power and capability of these processors we may be likely to start seeing them on our desktops rather than just in our entertainment centers. This will just be a step in the direction of the closed computing that microsoft, hp and other companies are wanting to push towards.
