  1. Re:1000 people?! on MillionManLAN Party: The Doors Are Open · · Score: 2, Insightful

    Ahem....

The largest and longest running "monster Computer Party" is The Gathering in Norway.

Note The "computer Party" monniker as it's not just Gamers that attend.
These event are huge BECAUSE we don't focus on one specific group.

We try to give everyone something here. Frome the person that just started using a computer, to the Linux Fanatic, the Uber Gamer or the Demo Scener.
And all the people in between.

Is it doable..well..we've been told that what we do is not possible, can't be done, the hardware does not exist, and so on since we started doing these kind of things in late 80's.

My hat off to the guys doing this LAN thou..because it is not easy to get started. You need a certain kind of insanity to keep it rolling when you reach the 450+ limit.

Heh..some of the "core" people even have clauses in their employment contract that states that they can not be made to work when The Gathering is being held :D

    But..I'm rambling..
Don't be negative, so they are a bit brash..so what..pulling of an event like this IS cause to be proud.

You US guys WANT these large events, they are something else entierly, If you THINK you know what this is but havent been to one..then please dont knock it until you've tried it.

Also..what is this BO fetish you guys have??
    is it an american thing??...
I've been taught by my parents to keep myself clean, and most other Lan Party/Computer Party people I meet do the same.

It get's stuffy, true. But it's not like th hall smells like an outhouse!
Hell even with 5400 people attending this easter noone died from BO poisoning.

    So please..stop stereotyping okay?
    it's just plain sad.

  2. Re:Norway: The Gathering on Dreamhack 2001 · · Score: 1

Actually there have been attempts, but the format seems to suit Scandinavie/Europe a lot better.

    Why?

    Well several reasons..

    1) The average American travels poorly :)
with that I mean that in the US it takes quite a bit of PR/Hype to draw a big crowd, people are not as willing to move around, while in scandinavia/europe we're quite used to have to move around.
It might have something to do with accessability to servces in the us compared to Scandinavia/Europe

    2) Cost/Liability
Renting a large venue in the US is VERY expensive, and on top of that you get the security expenses and of course our favourite: Liability Insurance.
    I can picture it;
Me:Hello I would like en event insurance/Libility insurance for an event o f about 5000 people
Insurance Company: Why sure! What kind of event is it?
    Me:It's a Computer Party
    IC:???!!!
    Me:The age group would be from 16 - 24
    IC:5000 of them?
    Me: yes
    IC: goodbye..nice talking to you.

    3) Attitude
with the way people that enjoy messing around with computers have been profiled lately we would probably be raided by the police with SWAT and the whole shebang, because we're all possible killers..sigh.

It would be WAY cool to do a Large LAN in the US.
If anyone SERIOUSLY want to do it get in touch with us. you should be able to reach us from the TG web page

oh and TG and DH are not competitiors :)
We're actually friends..Part of the TG crew is over there helping out on the network side of things.

    Hi people, Youre doing GREAT!

Almost more fun doing these things instead of attending them :)

  3. Re:NOT a lan party you fucks. on Dreamhack 2001 · · Score: 1

Actually both DH and TG has moved past that lable.

They both embrace EVERYONE that enjoys computers.
Be it Coders/GFX/Anims/Gamers, it does NOT MATTER as long as you have fun!

Now some people keeps on ranting about how this sub culture is ruining everything for that sub culture. Bullshit!

To all of you UberCoolHardCoreSceners , please stop!..you are NOT helping the recruitment to the demoscene by slagging someone for liking to play games instead of writing code,Making Grapichs, doing animations or making music..hey wait..ain't there a lot of so called "Game Lamers" that make VERY nice graphics for their clans Web pages, and what about level designers, skinners,Mod coders and so on!..

Also remember that some of the first Demos was actually Intros to cracked games :)..(still remember the long ass scroll text on the intro to Way of the Exploding Fist:)

But back to the issue at hand.
Parties like DH and TG are NOT focus parties, no!
we're parties that want ot include EVERYONE.
At TG I've seen everything from the TotalNewbieJustGotMyComputerForXmas to the Serious42YearOldEngineerWhoIsHereToPlayQuakeWithHi sSon

So PLEASE stop acting like jerks and can the Game Lamahs,Scene Nazi,Leecher Dood,IRC geek or whatever you feel you need to call your fellow Computer Enthusiast to feel superior.

Oh and Greets to all Old Amiga farts out there..
    remember CryptoBurners Rule! :)

  4. Re:How much power are they using? on Dreamhack 2001 · · Score: 1

    Nope...dosen't work that way...
a VERY easy way to calculate the needed power:
    1Amp*220V(scandinavia) per person.
And then you add the "NO MICROWAVES" rule of course:). You would not BELEIVE! the amount od stuff people bring with them to these parties :D

oh and for the standard "thats not enough power yadda yadda" comment..yes it is.

We've done this for quite some time now and it works :).

    Not stupid...human..
It's perfectly normal to want to be with people that share your intrests.

And you CAN'T sit still all the time.
There is stuff happening all the time.
I remember last year we had a "find the hidden sticker and get a ATI RADEON for free" competition , it was quite populare. A lot of people moving around :)

Also with the size of the venue, just going to the toilet is quite a long walk :)
