When the huge torrent of Mad Cow news hit CNN all day yesterday, I went to look up some statistics on deaths in the US.
- 700,000 people die of heart disease every year
- 43,000 people die in car wrecks
- 28,000 die by firearms
- 553,000 people die of cancer
- 0 people have died of Mad Cow in the US
- 774 people have died of SARS globally
- 143 people have ever died of Mad Cow in the US
- There have been no reported deaths of exploding batteries.
Statistics are mostly 2002 taken from the National Center for Health Statistics.
