you mentioned GbE interfaces, but whats the actual traffic going through that machine? throughput/pps is what actually brings a machine on its knees, not the number of clients or vlans. also i assume that the network interfaces have some hardware enhancements that take some load off the software processing.
Not so well known as other oss projects: http://www.zabbix.com/. It has its quirks, and it can be a little difficult to set up and get used to the first time, but it does its job well
