The link takes you to the appendix of proofs - this gives you no way to evaluate whether or not the propositions they are proving are useful in the first place. One problem with academic papers is that they fail to address the interesting question and are often predicated on absurd assumptions. I'm pretty confident in stating this because I have not only an MBA, but also a PH.D. in business strategy. The true heart of the argument has to be in the copyright / patent system which provides the basis for their "strategic" propositions - none of which appear to be very novel to me.

Last time I was involved in any sizable coding projects (late 90's) 1.24 million would about get you some nice chairs and takeout. It's a serious waste of money to fund at such a low level that all that is likely to be accomplished is the ramp-up and initial paperwork - but then DHS isn't known for spending wisely is it?

I managed to short SCOX in the upper teens and got out around ten. Not bad. The problem has been for months being able to borrow the stock in the first place. Just try getting a couple thousand shares - no way unless you've got better contacts than I (this is my profession BTW). The short interest that already exists in SCOX has dried up the stock available for borrowing and even when it goes to zero you haven't made all that much.

True enough as long as the substitute involves similar effort. OTOH people shopping on the web don't have a big immediacy requirement (they're willing to wait for delivery) so they may just wait for their favorite site to come back. There is such a thing as brand loyalty and familiarity counts for a lot of people. After all, who wants spam from a dozen booksellers? Amazon is bad enough eh?

The real cost of a web site dropping is a lot more difficult to figure out than you might imagine. Say Amazon goes down for a couple of hours. Are all those potential sales lost forever? I doubt it. Some people will just come back and order later. The firm is unlikely to see any long term impact unless the outage becomes habitual. Non-retail sites probably have even more flexability. About the only area in which an outage could have a real, long term adverse impact would likely be in financial services. If Schwab goes down for half a day they will suffer big time for a long time. If you're talking "the economy" as in the big picture economy" suffering - forget it. Web based commerace isn't that important yet.

It's funny that ./'ers can spot tech FUD a mile off, yet not be able to decode corporate BS when it's thrown right in their faces. He's not buying protection, even in the wise guy sense. He's got some "in" with SCO for publicity and favors. There's no good business reason to pay off SCO at this point.
