There is a trial program to use PKI certs with thunderbird.. and it works.. however, there's no key lookup for addresses.. which makes it somewhat of a pita.
And our site uses a broad spectrum of distros, however, the only Linux 'approved' for your 'primary desktop' in the interoperability standards (STD-2804i) is RedHat-EL. Convering many of our hosts from Fedora/RH 7-9 has been relatively straight forward.. but the lack of direct support for hardware has been a challenge. Outside of your 'primary desktop' you can run anything that can be patched and kept up to date with in reason. That means no NT, 98, ME, etc.
I know of major clusters running Fedora Core, Solaris, Irix, etc.. but most desktops are either Windows 2k or XP, or linux in some format. NASA HQ still hasn't really made any distinct "thou shalt" decisions about OS, but OpenSource is a primary component of NASA and will continue to be.
Some times the 'rules' are skirted for practicality. For example, since OpenSSL is still not approved, that means SSH isn't approved either. But there isn't a snowballs chance in hell they'll get everyone to stop using that.;-)
For those of us with Family names as domain names, holding that domain name for 100 years.. while debatably evil.. does become a viable use. It can be passed on from generation to generation. A legacy kinda thing.
For offices this works fine.. but in a home.. 11a is unrealistic.. I do this for a living.. and have had to come behind many an installer that talked a client into installing 11a into the home.. and the client got pissed cause of drop outs.
Given that most people have cable modems or DSL to the house at best.. 11b is a good solution on all counts. I have seen VERY few cases of interferrence from phones and things. Most times these are temporary and result in the user loosing speed.. not connectivity.
ermm.. no kidding?!!? some of these questions are
obvious "do you know what I am talking about" type questions. Not.. to be answered literally.. but
if you question the question.. that tells me ALOT more.
Splitting up drive partitions between/var and/home keep users from using the log space... and runaway logs from killing the users. (IMHO)
These questions ALSO probe depth... so do they know what a FAT table is... is a SIMPLE question... but if they know it, that can tell you history
Yes.. some of these questions are dated.. yes.. some are inaccurate.. but they are designed to provoke an answer, which may not be the answer to the question.. but the right one means more..
I tend to use my
questions list and ramp the questions up based on the competancy
of an individual. I also go out of my way to find a question they cannot answer.. teach them the correct answer.. and then ask them about it later in the interview so that I can determine how they retain information.
I usually also ask them how to troubleshoot a problem, as in my experiuence.. that has to be the hardest thing to teach.
Lastly.. I always ask them to ask my peers and my associates and my boss what _I_ am like and what the environment is like so that they come in with eyes wide open and all the information at hand to make a good decision. Their decision to work with us is just as important as our decision to hire them.
mabey stupid.. but i drive a jeep.. top down all the time.. nice that I had somethign that it was impossible to skip.. but voice may be useless in the wind
