  1. There's a reason asking about income is impolite on Ask Slashdot: Should You Tell Your Coworkers How Much You Make? · · Score: 1

Having access to an individual coworker's pay does nothing except invite demoralizing comparisons. What if you make more? Is that because you're a better employee, or a better negotiator, or because your college GPA happened to be higher? Or maybe some other good or bad reason. Who knows? Their salary won't answer those questions for you, but it might easily make it uncomfortable to work together. It's rude to ask about other people's income because it's unhealthy and counter-productive to compare yourself to other people.

On the other hand, having access to anonymous, aggregated data about the compensation range of people doing similar jobs in a similar location is useful because it helps you see if your pay is within the normal range. Instead of demanding to see your coworkers' pay, demand to see the salary bands for your position (or just look on glassdoor). If you're within the normal range and otherwise happy with your situation, stop worrying about where your coworkers fall in the range. If you're below the normal range, ask for a raise or change jobs. If you're above the normal range and you're still not happy with your job, maybe it's time to decide whether money or happiness is more valuable to you. In any case, you don't need to know what any particular coworker takes home to make your decision.

  2. Re:PDF file too large to download on Stop Christmas-Gift PCs From Feeding Worms · · Score: 1

Why not? Even if a PC is in an area of the world without any internet connection it may still be connected to a local area network and can still be attacked any number of ways including by infection from an MSBlaster-infected PC on the same LAN. It's not uncommon even for a PC which doesn't usually have an internet connection to be taken occasionally to somewhere which does have internet access such as an educational institution and directly connected to the internet from there in order to download updates, send emails, etc -- the only way of getting (occasional) internet access in some places.

Well, it's generally been my experience that in places where the population is too poor/too rural to afford Internet connections, they don't usually have computers at home either. Instead, they have net cafes, educational institutions, libraries, etc that have computers with a connection. People I know in those types of places make a trip to a net cafe or library occasionally to check their email or do other online business. Even if they did have their own computer, they certainly wouldn't carry it to the library to send their email.

Of course, I haven't been everywhere(not even close!), so maybe a place like you describe exists. If so, I'd genuinely like to hear where you have been that the people cannot afford an Internet connection but can afford to have a LAN full of PCs that can infect each other.

Well, that 95% can't get infected with blaster anyway, so why worry about them right now?

  4. Tied to Win2k? on Long-Delayed Rambus Machines May Show at Comdex · · Score: 1

Maybe the delays are so that the RDRAM release will coincide with the Win2k release. That way Win2k won't seem so slow, since the first computers it runs on will have the faster RAM.

So, what you're saying here is, "Anything that's going to cost me over $100 should be free, but I don't mind paying for things that cost less than that." That's what it sounds like to me.
