Just a clarification, I think there are a lot of people that are like "oh wow, 20% free time to do whatever you want!" Keep in mind that the 20% time has to in some way end up helping google. They have some pretty stringent guidelines on that 20%. But as to the parent, those are definitely things that sound legit for google to let him do.

  4. Not to worry just yet... on MPAA Sues Movie-Swappers · · Score: 2, Insightful

Judging from what the article says, it seems as if the program would act more like ad aware or spybot, since it would be available for download. My guess is targeted toward the soccer mom's, it's available on some site to download and parents would download it and check to see if they have anything that could be pirated stuff, just as if you were checking for malware or spyware and remove it. IMHO the MPAA is evil, but if they want the common person to adopt this, then they are going to try to make the software as nice as they can, and not make it some type of worm. That would also just give them bad press with the regular joes & janes of america.

I think opinions of graphics are fairly subjective, but I think what rockstar is doing is following a good business model here. What they are doing is just staying with their franchise and creating neat little twists with it. By not revamping the graphics, they can concentrate on working more with getting the gameplay right and creating cooler scenarios. This way they can have a faster development cycle and make more money. I know that's not what it should be about, but for most companies, this is what they want to do. And I think for the most part, they should keep doing these types of iterations as long as people are buying the software.

IMO, I liked the fact that they took the 80's miami theme in the 2nd iteration of the series, I thought it was well played on their part, and the fact that I could ride around in a fast motorcycle and fly off of hidden ramps was very enjoyable for me at least. And doing the licensed 80's tracks for the radio stations? Brilliant. If they keep on adding in little quirks like this, I think they can keep going. For this generation of consoles I prefer that they keep working more on adding more varied gameplay elements to something that already has a fun formula and decent graphics to it.

  6. Re:Adapters, gamepads etc. on Gamepads for Console/Arcade Emulators? · · Score: 1

I've heard really good things about the adaptoid, and just how the drivers for it along with the testing program works really well. Like most people have mentioned, getting the usb to controller adapter is the best, esp if you play a lot of console games. Personally, I like the gamecube controller best for playing the old NES, so I used the superjoybox 13 adapter.

And at first I was having some compatability issues between certain programs and the joystick, but I ended up just getting a keyboard emulator for the joystick, and that made all the problems disappear, since it just maps your joystick movements and button presses into keyboard presses. The program I ended up getting (joytokey) even allows you to map controls to mouse cursor movements, so that I can manipulate the mouse and click and drag by using the c-stick and two of the buttons on my gamecube controller. The keyboard emulation for the controller is pretty nifty, and definitely a nice solution if you do end up running into compatability problems with whatever adapter or joystick you end up getting, since the program figures that stuff out for you and makes them emulate the keyboard.

What about Conker's Bad Fur Day? Granted it was slightly raunchy, but nevertheless highly acclaimed by most game critics. And playing through it myself, it's still one of my favorite games. So granted they just revamped the old 3D platformer formula, they did it in an creative and humorous way.

And Star Fox Adventures for the Gamecube was not as well regarded as Conker's, but it still received fairly respectable marks. I'm not trying to disagree with you about how there are less and less people at Rare that have the "Rare" magic of making awesome games, (the creation of Free Radical and Zoonami have definitely taken some of their previous talent) but IMO, we shouldn't be so quick to dismiss their awesomeness and potential to develop great games based on one mediocre title for a new platform. (But if the 2nd one sucks, then by all means)

  8. what the phantom really is on Phantom Releases, Retracts Game List, Debut Rated · · Score: 1

If the phantom was shown at some form at CES, then I don't think it would be a hoax. What seems more likely is that Inifinium Labs had this idea of making some hardware that is pay to play, and ended up fooling someone (venture capitalist, big corporation) into giving them some money to work on this product.

I think where all the bad opinions about the phantom are coming from are just how disorganized the company has been with its execution of the product, which to me makes it seem like some of those startups that got a lot of money for some mediocre idea and did a poor execution of it (names removed in order to protect the innocent employess of those companies).
Is the phantom a hoax? doubt it. Are they gonna have a bad product? All signs are pointing that way, but because they probably got so much funding, they have to try to come out with something.
