LOL. Though in context of the story I do not thing I was incorrect. My statement referenced "hax0rs" and it would be unfair to call a slashdot story poster a hax0r without further evidence.
fall onto the side that you should be able to say anything you genuinely believe
So you own a company and your employees divulge your "secrets" to the world...in the meantime you spent millions in R&D while joe hack just copies your work.
So you are a spook (CIA undercover agent) and someone decides to leak the roster list of the CIA spooks....now your name/picture/family is known to the world...It happens to be that last week you pissed off some terrorist group, which now decides to target your kids.
Yea, unlimited free speech - way to go!
Free speech does have to be restricted in many ways because people cannot (as history proves) be trusted to know when to keep their mouths shut. This can cost people/companies millions of dollars, and in worst case scenarios cause someone to be hurt.
Notwithstanding the First Amendment's free speech guarantees
When you have NDA's, TOA's that specify what is allowed on a system that does not belong to you, you are foreiting your 1st Amendment right to access the system. This guy did not need to access that system to live. He broke into a private system.
I see your point, and I can't really argue with it. I guess to answer your question, if someone were to try and circumvent our law enforcement we would label them Terrorists and send the US Armed forces in.
But we are not trying to stop law enforcement from catching drug dealers, we are trying to stop a country from rolling over it's citizens with tanks.
We are scared that if we do not nip these guys right now, we will end up having another Hitler on our hands.
The problem with Iran is the current leadership. First they did lie to the IAEA. Second their current president speaks such insane jibberish. Ranging from saying the holocaust is propoganda made up by the United States. Saying the US and Canada should take all the Israeli people and move them into US/Canada borders. And then saying that Israel and (i think) the US should be wiped from the face of the earth. When the leader, and person who has the absolute ability to launch military attacks, starts talking about these things you tend to see why everyone is getting jumpy.
Nobody has a right to nuclear weapons, unfortunately, a bunch of countries have a whole lot of them (including the US). It does not make the situation better by saying "well because you have it i should have it". Two wrongs don't make a right....and the fact is, some countries are a bit more responsible then other countries. Iran's current president, based on his rhetoric, will have no problems launching a nuclear missile at Israel/United States the moment he has a chance. Now when Israel/US gets hit with a nuclear weapon from Iran...what do you think will happen? Yes, that's right, Israel/US will launch their nuclear weapons. And then we have WW3.
You can expect all you want, feeling bad about something does not mean someone has to go out of their way to change it. I feel bad that people have cancer, that doesn't mean I have to donate to the cancer society.
I think your expectations are a bit unrealistic, and by the tone of your message a bit unfair.
While they may regret doing what China wanted them to do, that does not mean they wouldnt do it again. My friend worked for a company that worked with another company who was going to outsource (his company provided the technology to do it). He said he felt "unpure" during all of those meetings, and thinks it sucks that outsourcing happens...he also said he didn't object because he wants to keep his job. This is not unrealistic nor an unreasonable sentiment.

(Btw I do donate to cancer society, aids research and diabetes research....which I am thankful i can say i have none of the three).
Thanks for the references, it just sounds bad. It is using two adjectives, in a non-breaking sentence, to describe one word. "More" educated and "highly" educated. It just does not sound right. Just like when my friend said that the picture he just bought is "very unique".
Lets not forget, look at that thing. It looks like an old style formula one race car. When it looks like a ferrari or a porche then this guy will have a chance at taking my dollar home.
And I (as a non-engineer) even know that electric engine can put out way more torque then a gas engine.
Child porn is not a minor issue by ANY stretch. Do I think Google is putting good faith into stopping child porn, yes. DO I think they should be sued by this clown, no. Do I think child porn is a huge issue - hell yea. Child pornographers should be strung up by their balls and then shot.
The suit, which claims Google acted negligently and intentionally inflicted emotional distress on the public
Well I access Google all the time, even for pr0n (especially for pr0n). Since this is the case, will get $100,000 for my distress about having child porn go across my screen?
I am pretty sure Google allows automated inclusion of a link from a website, but they try and scan the MILLIONS of sites to filter out the bad ones. I doubt Google wants to ruin their business for a sick minority who enjoy watching naked children. This guy is just trying to sue so he can make a buck.
FYI, Dell now owns Alienware. Where's your knowledge?
In my head, and it included your tidbit. Just cause they own it does not mean they will do anything to the company. Alienware might just be doing things as they always have
As for affluence, it's been reported that Mac users are more affluent than PC users
That helps, though four years old. Thats a long time
The same study reported that most Mac users are more highly educated than PC users too
But what are the stats today? Also, did they use those who buy Dell,HP, Gateway, etc or did they include those who build their own computers?
I do have slight issue with someone using a report that is four years old in an industry that calls the latest and greatest computers obsolete after three months.
-Avi
P.S. I don't think you can be "more highly educated"...you can be "more educated" or "highly educated"
I do (and did) know that Dell bought out Alienware...though from my understanding they are treating it as a hands-off kind of thing. Where they own (investors) the company but they want Alienware to remain (at least for now) autonomous...otherwise people will just see Alienware as Dell with a different name/look. What will happen in the future, only time will tell. But we can hope Alienware remains the same (or gets better).
are self-selected because they tend to know more about technology than your average
BWAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA. Ok, this guy has statistics backing this up? While it is not for all, with the exception of ONE person I have met, all Mac users I have met know very little about computers. I am not saying there aren't extremely knowledgable Mac users out there - that would be dumb of me to say - but Mac has always been touting the "we are easier to use then the other guy".
As for his other comment, about Mac users being more affluent. Well again, I hope he has statistics to back this up. Just because a Mac is typically more expensive does not make the user-base richer. Face it, I can buy one of those "cheapo" boxes for about 10 grand - yea Alienware sells them - so does Dell.
Well if you're an artist who's upset about pennies, then you should be upset at the record execs. Instead of driving their shiny new sports car to their summer home, they could be driving their slightly older sports car to their slightly smaller summer home, and give you 1 cent more for each song.
So, the point isn't that piracy is right, or that piracy doesn't hurt anyone, but this:
Record execs saying pirates hurt the artists is like the pot calling the silverware black.
No that is wrong. First of all, music artists who get that shiney new deal are getting a sweet deal. Second of all, even if that deal was absoluate crap - they signed a contract. If a music artist doesn't like the deal the record label is offering, then don't sign the contract. That issue is between the specific music artist and record label. It has no basis for this argument.
Record execs saying pirates hurt the artists is absolutely correct. Your analogy sucks. The record execs do not hurt the artists, the artists do not have to sign - they willingly sign. And you know what, I wouldn't mind getting a half million dollar deal even if it is a one-time offer.
I didn't miss the point. The artists are having some many taken, not as much as the record label (I won't get into an argument over the breakdown of cash). If i am a music artist, if people are taking one penny from me (and apparantly for each 99 cent song it is 6 pennies) I would be upset. Especially if you count it over hundreds of thousans/millions of songs.
I don't think his point was that it's okay to steal from the rich. I think he was pointing out that it's wrong to say we're causing these poor artists to starve, when we're actually hurting (slightly) the execs.
Then he is wrong. Stealing, no matter how small and who it's from is still stealing. Music buying is not a necessity of life. There is plenty of free radio music, and free "public" music.
Do I think these music moguls are jackassess, and do I believe they do a bit of price fixing? Yes and Yes. Is my life hurt because of this? No. I may buy a CD once or twice a year.
Perhaps they should have been showing me pictures of an executive in his Lexus... unable to afford a Lamborghini Diablo becuase I was file sharing
While I agree with your sentiment, that these execs are not treating many of their musicians properly (though some do get treated really well) I wouldnt use "his diablo" as a way to make your point. My name is not Robin Hood and i cannot justify stealing from the rich because they are rich. Especially when I am not giving it to the poor.
Do I think the fatcats are jerks, yes - especially with their attempts at price gouging, do I think they are wrong because they own expensive houses/cars/etc - no.
I have been asking this for years, ever since they nerfved icravetv.com (which was great to watch Star Trek, while IMing people, and doing homework. Now I can justify connecting my computer to my TV!
The RIAA did not disclose the methodology they used to determine that filesharing is occuring on those local networks, but it probably didn't involve asking permission.
Oh please. RIAA sets up a computer with busted music that is titled under some of the latest his name. Some kid from a college uses his fileshare program to access this music. When you download from a fileshare program the person uploading the file gets to see your IP address. No permission required.
Well please enlighten us. I am far from an elitist authoritarian. On occasion called arrogant son-of-a-bitch, but definitly not elitist or authoritarian. From Dictionary.com
republic
A political order whose head of state is not a monarch and in modern times is usually a president.
A nation that has such a political order.
A political order in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who are entitled to vote for officers and representatives responsible to them.
A nation that has such a political order.
often Republic A specific republican government of a nation: the Fourth Republic of France.
An autonomous or partially autonomous political and territorial unit belonging to a sovereign federation.
A group of people working as equals in the same sphere or field: the republic of letters.
So let's see, we got a president, we have a group of citizens who vote for representatives who are responsible to us (though they abuse this power). So yea i call that a republic.
You have a point, most of those senators have no clue. But hopefully, they have a staff that has someone who does have a clue (odds are they do considering the amount of staff members).....hmm what is CBR/VBR? I am pretty good with computers, electronics, etc but I don't know this. Now my personality drives me to look it up.
Now ROT-13 - i know what that is representative of, though not it's exact definition.
The lions sound good about now! Long live the Republic! Hail Ceasar!
And if they do well, they get another album and another tour. An album/tour contract is an artists dream. The music labels need to put a LOT of upfront money. In every business model, if a VC puts all the upfront money they have the most amount of control (unless they dont want it). It is fair, if the artist doesn't like the deal, he can sponser the first tour/album with his own money.
