I doubt there are many upper level CTO's (this is a CTO decision) who are not knowledgable enough to realize that this service is only useful if you are not planning to create your own system because you do not need such a long-term device.

We are not talking mom-n-pop shop here...we are talking higher end. So a university who decides to use this is probably doing so becuase it is just one or two short-term projects...but if that university plans on doing many future computing projects (not unlikely) they will probably build their own system (using the college grad students as cheap/free labor)... People on the upper end of the decision making process are not that dumb (though exceptions abound).

Valve/Steam just host the pointers to the servers - so the barely-reliable is based on whose system you are accessing. It is similar to blizzard - companies pay blizzard to license the software and give them a pointer.

As for the grandparent post - you can host your UT3 tourney - just charge each player $3/hour :)

Most cell phone accidents I have heard about happen when the person is dialing on the phone. Unfortunately there are blanket laws....unfortunately people cannot accept responsibility and say "it is because i suck at driving" but they say "it was because of the cell phone."

It takes me no more effort to talk on the phone then to talk to the person to my right. Actually I hate talking on the phone - so usually i am trying to get them off the line.

Now if you want skill, try talking on the cell phone, steering your car, and driving stick shift all at once... :D

  7. what about this thought process on Cellphone Drivers Drive Like Drunks · · Score: 1

I can understand typing in the phone number, looking for a contact, etc is distracting (imho no more distracting then changing the channel on the radio).

But how is talking on the phone anymore distracting then say - talking to the person in the passanger seat? Or turning around and beating your 8 year old brat for being annoying?

I think a large problem is the cell phone users who do not know how to use their phone and are typing away at the numbers concentrating on that instead of driving. Again, not all cell phone users fall in this category (i can use my cellphone blind)...

Another thing, since nobody likes to accept blame - those who were on cell-phones said "it was because of the phone" ---in reality, it is because you are an idiot and do not know how to type at a keyboard without looking at it.

There is a big difference between screwing wireless speakers to the wall and installing wired speakers while hiding them in the back.

At the rate we increase our data usage, who knows - maybe he will need to use more then one gigabit. 1 gigabit is not that much - 10 hardware devices running at 100 mbit per second will tear that apart. When you want to transfer many files at once - especially large files - you want to do it quickly and efficiently.

Again, my thought process is that we know fibre is the fastest right now - so it just might be more common in the next 5-10 years (especially with companies like Verizon doing live tests of fibre to people's doorsteps).

To do it right will be expensive (the new paint will need to match the aged paint so we are talking repainting the rooms entirely).

As for planning in 10-20 years...thats not me saying "i am not going to buy this computer because it will be obsolete in two years." We know fibre is the fastest right now - and thusly will be pretty darn fast in the near future and potentially farther future (10-20 years). Much better then cat5e

Assuming you could get enough juice out of the panels this would be an interesting option - but would require wiring. Most speakers are located close to the ceiling, as such not a lot of light is shinning down on them. So if you are wiring the panels to the outside of the house (to get the sun light) you will need to send those wires to the speakers...you might as well just plug it to an electrical outlet behind the wall...

My mom's fiancee was recomended to get wireless speakers for his living room. I told him to forget it. While it is easier now - you will constantly have to replace the battaries. I did in my condo...I bought a fish stick and wired my BOSE speakers in the living room. The wires run behind the wall and under it. God forbid if something happens to the wiress (cringe) though.
