  1. Re:Antimatter Galaxies? on NASA collecting anti-matter with giant ballon · · Score: 2

No, there is slight asymmetry between matter and attimatter. It is believed that Big Bang created slightly more matter than antimatter, and then almost everything annihilated.

    I can.

Take an isolated island. Bring 1000 fruit flies in. Let simmer for 300 years (not much, eh?)

At the end you will find that a new species of fruit flies emerge. They will not be able to breed with whatever species you've taken the initial sample from, which is pretty much the criterion of what constitutes "different species".

I'll probably even be able to dig up the reference on this little experiment. Yes, this did happen in Real Life (as opposed to creationist's dream world).

Yes I am offended. I am offended by the fact that a seemingly intelligent lifeform, like you, is unable to perform simple logical reasoning.

Take a bowl. Put some sand in it. On top of sand, put some lead shot. Shake well.

You will see that sand floats on top while lead shot sinks to bottom. Gee, that could not happen by chance! Indeed, having about 10^6 particles of sand and about 10^3 pieces of lead, the probability of the configuration we got can be estimated roughly as

    (10^6 * 10^3)!
    -----------------
    (10^6)! * (10^3)!

which is far less than (1/volume of the Universe expressed in atomic units). But we always get this result, sand on top, lead at bottom.

    So again, what's the point?

  5. SAMBA and StarOffice will be just fine. on Ask Slashdot: What can we do about UCITA? · · Score: 1
Enlighten me, 'coz I don't see how UCITA can affect either. Reverse engineering protocols/languages/formats is not the same as reverse engineering the software that uses these protocols/languages/formats. The former does not even require me to buy the license!

To reverse-engineer the MS Word format I (theoretically) don't need a copy of MS Word. I just need a large bunch of MS Word documents. Same goes for SAMBA. Just sit on the network and snoop packets, and eventually you'll decode everything you need.

Or is it illegal to put Linux on the same net with Windoze? That would be interesting.
