So why not have the people working on Hurd work on something new instead, or work on improving Linux? Competition can also hurt, by splitting up the resources into many small parts...
I believe it was John Carmack who popularized the idea: "if you are not sure how to do it, do it both ways and then pick the one that works best."
I remember a segment on Morning Edition from NPR about the Final Fantasy Movie. The art director said that the characters which seemed the most realistic were African-American or Elderly. Both of these were due to the way light was reflected by skin; less light is absorbed in dark skin so the simplified computer lighting system used in the movie looked real on those characters. Then the guy said that the old man appeared to be real because older actors often wear excessive amounts of makeup in movies, and people are used to seeing unrealistic light reflection on them. So the `death mask' on the Alias character is kind of like the makeup on old people in movies; she looks old and that is weird.
The first reason is the printer protocol. In EVERY version of Windows from 95 to XP, it takes at least 2 minutes to cancel a print job. I want to kill it.
The second reason is that when things die you usually can't view an error log or any diagnostic information; not to mention run them under a debugger.
And finally, I get fed up after fixing Windows for everyone else.
The first company that takes exploits this law by patenting a 'standard' breathanalyzer and gaining a monopoly will be quite successful.
New Mexico, by the way, is the only state I know of where a DWI "operation checkpoint" officer was arrested for DWI at a DWI awareness event.
