The ceiling on a plane is determined when the plane ceases to claim beyond 100fpm. That's a world apart between being a practical limit. In reality, commercial planes rarely fly over 35,000.
Here's a quick data point: at altitude: 600 mph (970 km/h) at 30,000 ft is best cruise. The reference I had listed unknown of ceiling. Having said that, while I don't know factually that the ceiling you're stating is incorrect, I suspect its ceiling is more in the range of 40-45. Having said that, I did easily find a second reference which states, "Service Ceiling 41,000 ft"; which confirms my guess. Most military jet planes have trouble past that point. As such, I seriously doubt a commercial passenger plane is going to do all that much better.
Try greater than 60,000 with a ceiling somewhere in the 70s.
The SR-71 can fly 80,000+.
There are even stories about towers giving clearance to 40,000 to SR-71, with the controller snidely stating, "it's yours...if you can get there." Whereby, the pilot replies back, "...affirmative...85,000 to 40,0000, followed by a nice chuckle."
I only know what I've read. Some searched here may provide additoinal information. If you read the various postings by others, you'll find that others are referencing the same articles. Wish I could be more helpful!
Actually, last I heard, two groups were able to reproduce his results using the published protocols. Many groups tried either by NOT following the protocols or tried to make up their own protocol. These groups failed! But, we can safely ignore those groups because that's called BAD SCIENCE; which is what you're basing your statement. One group which did follow the protocol, did reproduce the results but came to a different conclussion of what the results implied. Another successful group was simply unable to conclude exactly what was happening...but did confirm *something* was going on. Thusly, both indepent groups agreed more research and study was required. Both groups agreed that *something* was going on. Even the first group, which came to a different conclussion, were not able to completely explain all of the data the experiement provided.
So clearly saying, "that it doesn't work", is at best premature and at worst, simply ignorant. Either way, you sound of someone who is afraid of science doing science. IMO, the only responsible position to take on this is one of wait-n-see, to let real scientist do their job and come to an actual conclussion. At this point in time, no real scientist has been able to come to a factually supported conclussion based on available data. And those that have, are saying more study is required.
Holy crap! Someone who can think! I hate to tell you, but around here, if it conflicts with the established norm, it's 100% BS. Things like critical thinking, logic, or the ability to infer is not allowed around here!
I highly suggest you take your toys and go home...where intelligence will be appreciated!
The nvidia drivers are excellent these days. Several years ago, if you had crappy chipset, you probably had problems. These days, nvidia is rock solid, fast, provide accurate rendering, and easy to install. The ATI drivers suck ass. If you want solid, fast, stable 3d performance for Linux, nvidia is your only option...which is not to say it's a bad option.
Anyone that uses anything other than nvidia and expects a stable, high performance solution, are either uninformed or just plain stupid. Nvidia has been standing with Linux for a long time now and they provide a first class driver. Anyone that spurns Nvidia as a viable Linux solution are just wacky zealots. And frankly, I could care less if a zealot wants to complain.
Do you know if the battery issue has been fixed with the MT-40 CPU's? Last I heard, because of a bios bug, the laptop would hang during post if you attempted to boot from battery and had the MT-40 CPU installed.
I've been eyeing that sucker for a while now...but always worry about performance. How well does the GPU perform? Good enough to play games like America's Army? How long does the battery last for you? I would love to see a good Linux user's report with this laptop! Care to share?
For those that don't know, the z92k is the barebones model of the more main stream A6k.
This is classic slashdot these days. IMO, the 80/20 rule applies. 80% of the mods have their heads stuck up their asses these days. It constantly amazes me how stupid the moderators can get around here. If the moderators were worth a damn, as they were 4+ years ago, this type of crap would have already been fixed. Sadly, as/. has become more main stream, the IQ of the reader base (and thus the mods) have dropped into the toilet. As you rightly point out, most can not even infer basic facts, logic, or bring any knowledge to the table.
The best thing you can do is meta mod as much as possible. It used to be, some years ago, I might have to correct the moderation once or twice every three or four meta moderations. These days, I have to fix things three or four times every meta moderation. That clearly indicates that the current readers (therefore mods), are completely retarded and have not a clue what the fuck they are doing.
I hate to say it, but/. is rapidly going down hill because there are so many completely fucking retarded people running around here these days.
I've been looking for a Turion 64MT laptop with a nice NVidia card which doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I've not been able to find much. The ATI drivers suck badly for Linux. ATI pisses on Linux users and smile the entire time they do so. So, simply rule of thumb. If you want string 3d graphics performance and a reliable box, you must use Nvidia. If you want crashes, incompatibility, graphics artifacts, broken features, use ATI.
Long story short, ATI + Linux is not a viable solution unless you enjoy hitting your self in the head with a hammer.
Gnome is not a window manager! Gnome is a desktop environment. The defacto window manager for Gnome is Metacity, but you are free to use any properly compliant window manager in conjunction with Gnome. For example, you could run E and Gnome together. Running any type of complete desktop environment on a P133 is completely inappropriate. You should be running the lightest WM you can find, without a desktop environment. A WM such as FVMW2 might be worth looking at.
Your complaint makes as much sense as riding on a train with lots and lots of automobiles in tow and declaring all of the carried cars are slow. Get off the train then try again!
While I can not saying this is the correct answer for your situation, I must add that some passively cooled devices require a complimentary designed case with passive cooling specifically part of its design. I would not consider it unreasonable to expect a case to support an intelligent convection cooling design.
For example, many piston airplanes have engine bays which are specifically designed to cause convection cooling. Without it, even while in flight, the engines may over heat. This pops up because people tend to think that raw air pressure in the front of the cowl causes cooling. In reality, for may piston planes, it's convection cooling which actually provides proper and equal cooling of various parts of the engine. On many planes, there are baffels right in front of the crowl inlets and people sometimes remove these. As a result, cooling of the engine often gets much, much worse despite having greater air pressure into the engine bay.
What does engine cooling have to do with chip cooling? Well, just because a chip is designed for passive cooling does not mean it should not overheat when outside of its case. Bluntly, it is not uncommon for many CPUs and chipsets to overheat (or at least high heat levels), when the computer is operated with its case removed...just like an engine. Long story short, even passively cooled systems often require intelligent case design to ensure proper air flow is created.
*deploys cluebat back* Last I heard, the software was proprietary and is most certainly not GPL'd. Again, that's the last I heard. Besides, having an LDAP server in of its own, doesn't get you much. After all, OpenLDAP already exists. It's all the tools, templates, utilities, etc...that adds value.
*breaks cluebat* Next time, hit yourself a couple dozen times with it when you get the bright idea to use it.;)
That's absolutely false! The quote my company recently received was around $10,000+ for starters. That's a far cry from "zilch"! Given the size of the company it was to support, that price will place it as the most expensive option, on a per user basis! Your definition of "zilch" must be different from everyone else's.
That's exactly right. AMD pruposely does not chase the clock cycle monkey. That's the whole point behind their naming convention. While I admit I did not read the article, based on these comments, it's pretty clear that the comparison is complete BS. AMD, for a long time now, has gotten great performance by changing/tweaking their design and not by simply cranking up cycles....which sounds exactly what was done in this comparison.
Who knows, this test may be foretelling of AMD's next effort, but until the actual product is out, IMO, this test is meaningless.
Active Directory can talk to LDAP, but it is not LDAP.
Very common misconception! LDAP is a protocol. LDAP says nothing of the backend storage mechanism. AD is an LDAP server. Anyone that tells you otherwise is sadly misinfomred. Anything that serves data via the LDAP protocol is a LDAP server.
I saw a documentary on this topic some number of years ago. They tried this same project in New York. Within one day all stickers had been removed and all of the bikes had been stolen. The project was considered a failure after a single day. Many bikes were found in area pawn shops. When interviewed, some of the less scummy people were asked why they refused to use the bikes. Their statements were something like, "if I fall, who do I sue?" And still others were, "if the bike fails to get me where I need to go, who's legally liable?"
In other words, in some cities, such behaviors are considered being a responsible citizen. In others, they consider it theft and knowingly steal the services. It's no wonder the associated ideologies differ drastically depending on where you are and who you ask!
Oh, and let's not forget that you don't have to look all over the planet to find your crop like you do with fossil oil, which makes up for a large portion of fossil fuel expenses! Sounds like more effort is require to sustain fossil fuels that are required for organic fuels.
Seems you've taken a turn out into left field. I specifically stated that many of the proposed bills were so vague so as to allow EXACTLY those types of situations to be deemed torture. That's the facts. I clearly stated that I wasn't sure what the final verbage looked like in the bill which was signed into law. Nonetheless, it doesn't change the facts that several of the first attempts were as poorly worded and lame ducks, exactly like the DCMA is. That's the point of this entire thread...and yet, you've seemingly started addressing something else entirely.
That's the whole point! The bills were worded as such, that the exact situations could be deemed torture under some of those bills! Only a complete dumbass would sign a bill like that. I don't care if you love or hate the President, he did the right thing. Period.
And yes, I have functioned for 6-months on *as little* as 8 hours of sleep per *week*. I understand VERY well what sleep deprivation is and does. It took me about a year to fully recover from the affects.
Until you understand the facts, I would suggest you refrain from further comment. You're only making your self sound like a simpleton.
BS. Please provide me a passage that states repetative questioning is cruel and unusal punishmnet. Any reasonable person would consider it annoying...but punishmnet? Nope. Here's an example of the stupidity of anyone that thinks the above is torture.
Example 1: Thug: It's past my nap time. I want to take a nap. Cop: No, it's noon. Where where you...bla... Thug: You're denying me rest. Torture!
Example 2: Cop: Did you kill him? Thug: No. Cop: Did you kill him? Thug: No.... Thus (after 1000 times): I've been totured! Oh no!
IF you truly thing that is protected by the Constitution, you're not worth debating...
Lets look at the past couple of years. The Executive branch has claimed the powers to: declare people including American citizens "enemy combatants" and hold them incommunicado overseas for however long they wish with no access to the US court system, wiretap American citizens within the United States without a court order or indeed any judicial review. Recently the Vice President has also claimed to power to unilaterally declassify anything that he wants.
This actually started during WWII and I've heard references to precidents existing even before. So, clearly you would need to look back some 6-decades or more...not just the last couple of years.
The CIA has been caught running torture flights through allied countries without their apparent knowledge, running secret prisons in EU member states without EU knowledge, and to top it off, they were caught kidnapping people on the streets of Milan without the knowledge of the Italian government.
So has just about every significant world power (in one form or another) in the last century. What's you're point?
The Pentagon, the FBI and the California National Guard have all been caught spying on peaceful protesters on American soil, in spite of a law that specifically forbids this.
Does the name Nixon mean aything to you? Do the 1960's have any associative meaning in this context? This isn't exactly new. US History is ripe with examples of anti-American behavior by American leaders.
A few months ago... Congress passed a law banning torture. The President grudgingly signed this into law, but reiterated his belief that he wasn't personally bound by the ban.
I didn't follow the actual law that was passed, but did it actualy describe what is "torture"? Several bills which were positioned to fill the gap had verbage that was plain out stupid...but it didn't stop people from blathering on about how the President was obviously pro-torchure because he wouldn't sign a stupid bill, written by morons pandering to their people, written to passify idiots.
As an example, when someone takes hostages, common FBI tactics require power to be cut and loud music/sounds to be played to deny rest and comfort to the hostage takers. Under some of those propsed bills, this would be considered toture. Under some of those proposed bills, simply asking somone a question 1000 times in a row would be considered torture. Under some of those proposed bills, simply deneying somone sleep would be considered torture. Under some of those propsed bills, simply waking someone in the middle of the night would be considered torture. Under some of those propsed bills, simply telling lies or attempting to manipulate mental state, would be considered torture. One only has to look at laws like the DCMA to understand the power of a powerly written law, attempting to pander to the stupidity of one group or another.
Running with your logic, the President is showing his red, white and blue blood when the DCMA was signed into law but is anti-American because he wouldn't pass a bill which erroded the most basic of common sense; inhibiting the most basic functions of law enforcement. You can't have it both ways.
You're point was made, but let's be cautious about the examples used to make that point.

I assume you mean 40 > 60....I agree with that...but from a plane and pilot's perspective, it's a huge difference.
