Mate, I grew up in Launceston (many years ago) and when I first got to "mainland" Australia people there thought Tassie was some tiny little island full of Tassie Devils.
It would not surpise me at all if non.au's thought it was a separate country (assuming they could even find it on a map in the first place):)
