I think the difference is in incorporating an "identfiication signal" in the original request that is then processed and determines the file to return. So it's not just requesting "foo.txt" and returning it. But, I would think any program that processes GET or POST data and returns a file based on those "identification signals" would be a violation or prior art for this "invention".
I'm not an expert or even really famliar with "automatic summarization", so I don't know if it's obvious or not. The writeup accompanying the patent seems to be a pretty specific algorithm with ways of slicing up data, assigning weights, ranking, etc. That isn't reflected in the broader claims, though. So it may not be a good patent, but it at least looks like some legitimate work went into it. Far better than most "on a computer device" or "on the Internet" patent trolls...
Yeah, the snippets patent actually does look legit. I doubt that Google's process exactly replicates all of their claims, though, even though the end result looks the same. Without knowing Google's algorithm, I guess ST has to assume Google may be using the same process or figure their lawyers can make a case regardless of reality.
> The slashdot summary makes it sound as if wedge-shaped laptops are now all covered by this patent.
Isn't that yet to be determined based on how this patent is used offensively? It's obvious use is to prevent exact copies of Macbook Airs and that part I'm fine with. But what is different enough? If there are no contours on my cover, is that enough? If the main body isn't a wedge but more trapezoid or trapezium like, is that enough?
I'm assuming it'd be more the other way around. If you want a.tickets domain, you have to be selling tickets. I can't (if the registrar has rules) put up my gallery of speeding tickets on a.tickets domain, for example.
I doubt there'll be any enforcement like this or as you suggest, though.
>> There, the advertisers have discovered private data about individuals in an indirect way
How did the advertiser discover that Joe's FB page triggered an ad showing? As I read the terms, the Advertiser just knows the ad was shown XX times. FB can clearly make the connection, but how does the advertiser?
Is FB selling your data or is this assumed? The last time I read through the policies, they clearly showed that advertisers could choose "trigger" words or topics and pay to run ads based on the triggers. Your content was never sent anywhere, though.
>> Then I discovered that clicking on a side-launcher button doesn't raise an active window up to the top; it just spawns a new one
I use Unity on several computers and I can't say that I've ever seen that behavior. Weird. Clicking on the launcher always brings up the latest window for the application. If there are two or more windows open for that application, clicking again on the launcher presents you with a view of each window and the option to choose which one you want. I find opening a new window for an application sort of a pain, as you have to go into the file menu -> new window or right click on the launcher (not sure if that works for all applications, though).
You don't _have_ to type in Unity. Click on Applications and expand the Installed section and click on what you want. Click on a Filter if you only want a certain category of applications shown. No typing... Just a different interface style from the old dropdown menus, but the same result.
Same here, except it's an i5 box I built. The RALink WiFi card wasn't recognized in Win7, but luckily I had saved the driver/installer on another partition. Ubuntu had no problems recognizing it.
Win XP on a Thinkpad T43p had no sound. I had to find drivers for it. Ubuntu has no problem with sound on the laptop.
Dell Mini has had no driver problems running Ubuntu (it came with a Dell version that I wiped and loaded with regular Ubuntu) and another newer Thinkpad has no problems with drivers in Win7 and Ubuntu (running the latest version).
I had to go into "additional drivers" on my MILs Dell (few years old) to enable wireless. So not automatic, but certainly easily available (ethernet worked, so I was able to download that way).
All annecodotal, I know, but there aren't always problems and for me, Ubuntu just works better.
I would imagine this is more of an advertisement rack showing the numbers and there are other racks with the actual various sizes that people can try on.
Same question... what's the abuse? I know this is Slashdot, but do you really think people are so ignorant that they can't make a decision except based on this number? Just like some game getting 4.5/5 stars and another only 2/5. It's a data point that may help me make my decision, but it's not going to be the only deciding factor.
A percentage very near 100% use FB to some extent. And yes, I do educate that FB is PUBLIC, no matter what anything else says. But in the end, everyone else are not my responsibility.
It's a great way to keep in contact with a large group of people (family, friends, co-workers) and stay updated on a variety of topics (football, TV shows, news). I'm not going to email everyone individually. I'm not going to call everyone individually. They are not all individually going to come to my website or gallery. I'm not going to visit 30-odd websites to get the latest news/updates/posts.
I have no expectations of privacy for anything I do on the web, so I don't really care what FB does with my posts or interests. That's the real world. It's not an "ignorant sheeple" don't care... it's an "educated assessment of the personal value of the system" don't care.
If it doesn't work for you, then that's fine and obviously there are plenty of other options out there.
Agree on the last part. I hope that's in the works.
As for the first, clicking on the launcher -> more apps -> filter -> games -> expand installed and it should bring up a list of all games installed. From there you can drag back to the launcher or choose "keep in launcher" after you've started it.
I'm not on timeline and I just edited my settings to not show the @facebook email address.

How broad are design patents, generally?

Yes... I noticed the entire internet slow down when you searched earlier. Please stop.

So you think it's doubtful or questionable that Google does this? So do I.

OMG THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!
At least you earned your shill paycheck today.

Unity 3D runs just fine on my Thinkpad T43p. IIRC, it had whatever upgraded graphics card was available at the time.
This is no different than the old drop-down list of applications used before or used in Windows. You still need to know that "gedit" is a text editor.
And the same categorized listing of applications exists in Unity as it did before, the icons are just larger and presented in a different manner.
"most people" have no problems with the Unity UI. squeaky-wheels and all that...

Do I need to post detailed screenshots and step-by-step instructions so that you can figure it out?
Well that's why you can turn it on or off to suit your needs.
Go to the back button and not all the way to the edge of the screen...
Complaints like this always remind me of the old "it hurts when I do this" ... well, don't fucking do that!
