    What if, by pure dumb luck, something DOES happen? You know, I'd almost welcome Armageddon because there would be no living with them then.

    If, by pure dumb luck, the world does end in 2012, you aren't going to have to worry about a few stupid people, or indeed anything else.

    You see, there's this thing called "probability". For example, you certainly cannot plan for a large comet to hit the planet where the nuclear plant stands. Or you can, but if you do you should consider that damage from comet will far eclipse the potential fallout.

    Well done on the patronising tone!

    Although the tsunami was obviously not a normal, day-to-day event, and although it had a very low probability of happening, the point is that it did fucking happen.

    You're not talking about Godzilla, or time travelling anti-matter zombies suddenly appearing and attacking the power plant.

    The fact is, a commercial decision was made that the engineering was sufficiently good for some unspecified probability level. And they got it wrong.

    Thats the cool thing about nuclear waste... 100% of the arsenic that came out of the smokestack of the coal plant "nearby" my house is still in the lake where the city gets its drinking water... oops. However virtually all the radioactive iodine the nuke plant "nearby" my house has ever made has long since decayed into irrelevance.

    Yes, that's why there is no problem with just collecting all nuclear waste, leaving it in a tank for a couple of months then dumping the harmless residue into landfill/the oceans, isn't it?

    Obviously, any concerns about the long term storage and disposal of toxic nuclear waste are just scaremongering from Green Hippies.

    FYI, the word is 'atypical' - not that it matters to your point any, just wanted to drop the correction somewhere.

    The word "untypical" is less formal and pseudo-scientific sounding than "atypical" but it is perfectly acceptably in normal English.

    As the years progress, an ever increasing majority of people are forced, through various agencies, into a state of poverty which becomes a self perpetuating cycle of ignorance and...well, stupidity.

    I know, things were much better in the middle ages when 98% of people were kings and philosophers. Oh wait, they were all dirt-farming serfs, and it's only modern society that's produced a middle class of people free from the constant threat of starvation and able to afford the free time to learn and think.

    People with an over-romanticized view of the past who want to recreate it now (i.e. conservatives) always remind me of those clowns who have "past life experiences" and it always turns out they were (Hollywood versions of) Cleopatra or Pocohontas, and not some serf sleeping on a pile of flea-ridden blankets in a mud hut after spending all day sifting through pig shit to find squishy bits of potato to feed their ricketty children.

    Further, not all people are bright enough to benefit from education. When you insist on "educating" them, you create a memorization contest, not a thinking contest, and as a result you penalize smart people, who tend to get bored and zone out when memorization contests come around.

    I sensed this was going to turn into one of my favouritest of slashdot posts, the sub genre known as "I was too clever for school, I got bored easily and failed all the exams because the teachers despised my genius, which is why I am now working as a part time burger flipper at the age of 43 while living in my dead mother's basement".

    But, sadly, it fizzled out into just another right wing brain wank.

    Many families are able to exist exclusively due to the support infrastructures provided by the extended community.

    The children in those families may grow up to be great poets, doctors, warriors, scientists or explorers. You have social work and support for the children, not the stupid fucking parents.

    you'll see that people with an IQ lower than 100 have a lot more babies than people with higher IQ. So it is not a surprise that overall there is a downward trend

    Like many of the racial minorities in this country which are extremely intolerant of women and homosexuals yet with a straight face can complain of racism then turn around and be every bit as bigoted and intolerant themselves.

    That is a seriously stupid argument. If you are a black homophobe or Asian misogynist, you are a homophobe or misogynist the same as if you're white. It doesn't mean you can't still be subjected to racism.

    If a white supremacist gang beat up a black man, I doubt they care about his views on gay sex or feminism either way.

    But these things have associated costs, so we also spend that extra time working to pay off the fancier cars and all the entertainment products we consume.

    Except that the improvement in efficiency due to technology means that all that extra cost should have been paid for by using robots, computers etc which don't need to be paid salaries. Instead, it has gone to making the very wealthy even wealthier, rather than being distributed equally throughout society.
