If you are a University Student in New Zealand (and I think Australia and possibly Ireland) you can get what's known as a J1 visa which allows you to work and travel in the US without a job before you arrive. Various cultural exchange programs sponsor you etc. So in effect you could go to the US and try to get a job and then see if they will sponsor you after your J1 runs out.
