  1. Is it me or...... on Suggestions for a DVD Video on Demand System? · · Score: 1

OK, is it me or are these solutions REALLY bloody complex? Although I like the sticks and mud and will begin research soon..... So, buy an ENORMOUS rack you can stow in a closet somewhere in the house, load it up with a server, drive arrays and get it running. Next, get a digital video card set up between said rack and your TV...... or TVs. Find a friend with no life and lots of time on hand and coerce him into loading/ripping all the DVDs to the disk array. Next, realize that all of your hard work, well his, now allows you to run through your library with ease and with a little extra Cat5 allows you to have your movies anywhere on earth you can find a connection and without paying for HBO. Then, invite Slashdot users over to "ooh and ahh" ~j -At first I thought my computer had become a smoker..... then the caffeine returned to me and I realized I was about to be reduced to a smoldering pile of MotherBoard pieces.

  2. Thought..... on Data Storage Leaders Introduce New Wares · · Score: 1

While the industry..... and consumers.... spend billions a year on R&D for larger storage devices/solutions and more secure ways to store data without losses, has anyone considered making the data SMALLER? Unlimited hours are going into encryption algorithms every year but most of the people I've seen out there are still using WinZip and other usefull but not too impressive compression utils. MP3 made audio better at a smaller (data) cost, mpeg for video etc..... what about the rest of the crap on your drive? Is it not possible to keep a compressed/simplified version on files on drives/b'ups and reinflate them when needed for operation?

  3. Hmmmmm...... on WiFi Free-For-All · · Score: 1

So, does this mean I need to buy one way tix (access to terminal) spend 12 hours in a hub sniffing every bit of wifi, bluetooth, etc and creating wealth by selling proprietary data back to the business/sales/engineering jockey dumb enbough to transmit it over the air?q
