  2. Name that long-lived system. on Dan Bricklin on Software That Lasts 200 Years · · Score: 2, Interesting

There is a software and hardware system that my company is designing to be maintainable until 2048. It has a long and well funded development cycle. We are developing version 6.0. Its funny though, the product has only ever been tested since we developed it over thirty years ago. And the design goal is to make it so well and in such quantity that it is never used. What is it?

  3. No Bylines in The Economist on What Magazines Do You Read? · · Score: 1

One thing that makes the Economist stand out is its lack of bylines. Apparently, most magazines lacked bylines back in the day. I would be curious to know if anyone knows of other mags, which lack bylines or once did.

  4. Re:The Atlantic on What Magazines Do You Read? · · Score: 1

I have been a subscriber to the Atlantic, which is based out of Boston, for a year now. They are liberal, politically focused, and the writing is fantastic. Look for the Primary Sources section, facts and figures with a little comment.

  5. Worth the effort to learn Java. on Java Faster Than C++? · · Score: 1

The Java regular expressions feature is documented at the Java web site. Check out the Java forums for more detail. We have all had trouble learning new APIs and becoming familiar with new languages. But, it is worth the time to learn Java.

  6. Defense cannot be outsourced. on Computer Engineering Degree Most Valuable · · Score: 2, Informative

A year ago I found a software engineering job at a small defense contractor in the northeast. What enabled me to get the job was leg work. While most of my friends complained about the job market, I sent out resumes and tapped every resource I had. What stopped them from getting jobs was their perception of the market. I know too many people who gave up on the job search without sending out more than a few resumes. Some went to graduate school or settled on low paying temp jobs. Provided one is flexible about the location and does his homework ,the jobs are out there. I say work at a good small defense contractor. The work is stimulating, well funded, and cannot be outsourced.
