4. Just to piss people off, I'll remind everyone that an iPod is not a particularly good decoder. Of course, the amount of money needed to get a good (I can tell there's a difference with my eyes closed) DAC is $3k
don't you mean with one ear tied behind your back?
a friend pointed this out to me once, explaining why she would buy vinyl over CDs: "i only buy vinyl when i want to play something for other people".
Likewise, it's so much better to show somebody a CD cover when you play something for them at the house. A stereo isn't a stereo without a stack of jewel cases and digipacks next to it. A naked stereo evokes the sterility of a hospital or hotel room, and reaks of neglect.
...as somebody who actually pays artists' royalties from EMusic, iTunes, and physical CD sales, let me point out that the royalty payments are about 15 per track from eMusic, as compared with 65 from iTunes and about 40-55 from most of the other music download outlets. Multiply by, say, 12 songs per album, and artists are making only about $1.80 per album sold on EMusic...
if that 65 costs them a $7 CD sale, then, yes, i suppose it does cost more than 65 to rip and upload a CD to iTunes.

billions? gross profit at $20 per disc on a platinum records is still only $20 million. to make a billion you need to go like 50-platinum on a record.
