I was rewriting the website for a local police department and needed to get the login information so I could upload my changes. They had long since forgotten the login name and password, so I called the hosting company (I can't remember which one it was) and basically said "Hi, my name is Chris and I am working for the X Police Department. I was wondering if you had the login information because we seem to have misplaced it." The guy on the other line made a few keystrokes and asked if I had a pen. He never checked my identity and I was calling from my cell phone, so he could not have checked the caller ID to see that I was calling from within the department. After trying, unsuccessfully, to login, I called back and asked to double check the username/password and run me through the login procedure. This guy (different from the first) gave me the login info again and gave me step by step directions on how to login.
Something is not right with this picture. An individual's website is bad enough, but this is the site for a police department. Imagine if I was malicious. I would be able to do whatever I wanted and may have ruined the reputation of the department.
Out of curiousity and because I have been trying to figure this out ofr some time now....why don't they just make the processors bigger? Looking at an old PIII I have laying around, it's 2 in^2. I'm sure P4's aren't that much smaller. What if they bumped it up to 2.5in^2 or 3 in^2? then they wouldnt have to worry about making the transistors smaller because there would be all that extra space.
If there is any flaw to my theory, please let me know because in my mind, it seems like a very good solution....
the question should be "Do i really want microsoft getting int omy computer to find out my hardware?" i dont know about you guys, but theres something about that idea that i dont like.
yea, that guy is definately like 10 years old. recompile the kernel everytime you switch your modem? boy, you must be on crack! unless youre not using the stock kernel, most hardware is supported in some form. winblows, on the other hand, doesn't recognize either of my ethernet cards (one is VIA Rhine II and the other is a 3com), my scsi card (adaptec), or my sound card (c-media)....linux recognizes all of them right off the bat, altho i do need to modprobe my sound card. maybe 10 years ago, youd have to recompile everytime you changed hardware, but not anymore.
and whats this about windows single handedly creating personal computers? this is probably before your time, but apple created the personal computer years before microsoft.
next time you wanna write something, please get solid facts. you are obviously uneducated in this field. youre entitled to your opinions, but when you are talking about stuff like that, you need facts to back them up.

it sounds like good logic to me....
