I have Gentoo running on a PentiumIII-450 system with 256 MB RAM. Sure, compiling lasts a bit (nearly 2 Days for KDE 3.2), but then the machine feels incredible responsive considering its age. Self-compiling is an advantage, for sure. Had Windows and other Linux Distros installed before, and all of them felt slower.
