The original idea is both brilliant and quite old.
Alan Cooper wrote about it in his landmark book "About Face: The essentials of interface design" in 1995 and again in "About Face 2.0: The essentials of interaction design".
He's got a lot of good suggestions for a decent implementation. I hope that the DBFS developers read that.
WinFS developers propably have read it too, but as always, they're trying to add too much spice in it, and end up with an indigestible agglomeration of crap, that won't come out of their colons before sometime around 2007.
