Linux Australia is getting Jeremy Malcolm to secure the use of the trademark "Linux" for use in Australia on behalf of Linus Torvalds via the Linux Mark Institute.
The reason is that unscrupulous operators have been abusing the Linux trademark, and so Linux Australia decided to persue securing it on behalf of Linus. (aka doing the right thing)
The T's and C's (i.e. charging for use of the trademark Linux in Australia) are no different from those identified in the Linus-approved Linux Mark Institute. But note, that Jeremy Malcolm's notice is NOT asking for money, just saying that in the future you may be asked to licence the trademark if you sell a product that is levereging the Linux trademark. This is a key point in trademark law - to secure the trademark in the first place to stop some companies from doing the wrong thing.
> When you're driving there, do take the speed limit signs seriously. Violating 25km/h speed zones is an instant $200 fine, and a yellow curb with a person on it is a 25km/h speed zone 24x7. > They're also touchy about poking your bumper over the line at intersections, but they're as slack with their trafficators as Kiwis and BMW/Merc drivers.
What is this Leon, scare tactics? I've lived in South Australia 2^5 years and I've never seen any such things!
I buy their software, and don't download iso's because I want to support them in continuing to produce quality GPL software. Red Hat critics need to ask themselves if they want OSS to succeed - if so, get on board and support a company that's making sure Linux will become mainstream.
This article has very little credibility with the outlandish claims it makes. This guy is obviously a big KDE fan out to damage these GNOME companies that are indeed doing a lot for free software.
I read quite a few of the GNOME mailing lists and there isn't any big rivalry between Eazel and Ximian; at the developer level everyone is working together trying to build the best dektop.
This guys obvious dislike of RMS' ideals shows that he doesn't 'get it' when it comes to open source.
And finally, last night I installed Ximian GNOME 1.4 for RedHat 7 (binaries). Very nice, very cool, easy to use for new players. Brings the desktop to a new level. These sort of pseudo-journalists should go away and get a clue before putting this sort of garbage on the web.
Just to warn you all... I checked out networksolutions as a possible registrar for a domain I wanted to register via their "see if your requested domain is registered" box and well, network solutions registered it for themself! ie they "stole" my name from their httpd logs of me checking to see if the domain was registered via their website! Now, if I had proof (how could I?) I'd do something about it, but just *warning* you all be careful with how you check out domain names! In the future I'm going straight to internic - I won't be caught be shonky guys like them again!

See Jon Oxer's blog post on the topic (he's Linux Australia's president).

I've used FreeBSD, NetBSD, Debian and Red Hat.
Red Hat is now my OSS OS of choice.
