  1. Whatever the cause is... on Global Warming Endangered by Hot Air? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Even if humans are not contributing to global warming in any way, the steps that can be taken to fight global warming would lead to less pollution and more efficient use of energy. How is this a bad thing?

Even those who support fossil fuel derived energy and the like are not immune to the cancer it causes...

  2. Those who advertise on Battlefield 2142 to Bundle Spyware? · · Score: 1

Aren't the companies and their ad agencies who use spyware such as this to advertise their products just as bad as EA? Spyware and spam wouldn't exist if it wasn't making money for anyone.

  3. Regarding Mr. Cuban on Mark Cuban to fund Grokster vs. MGM case. · · Score: 1

I recall an article here on Slashdot about Mr. Cuban some time ago, where he enthusiastically brags about his consumer grade HP PCs and other nonsense. I think this seems to be another ill-informed publicity stunt for him. I'm willing to bet he'd love to turn this into profit by appearing to be the good guy fighting for the common person, or whatever. I could see him trying to sell some kind of media subscription service that's just as bad as any other, all the while using buzzwords/phrases like "revolution" and "take back the music" and the like.

Some people truly believe in what they fight for, but so many others look to make a profit on anything they can. I find that to be quite disappointing.

  4. Tech Savvy? on Three Minutes With Mark Cuban · · Score: 2, Insightful

I would have to say Mr. Cuban is more of a businessman than anything...what kind of tech enthusiast brags about his new HP Media Center PC? And why all the redundant backups on easily damaged hard drives full of precision moving parts? Seems pretty silly to me. This article is the usual from PC World - profit-driven filler. I'm surprised the article doesn't have more links to buy the stuff plugged in the text. Maybe I'm just being an elitist? -K

  5. One thing to be aware of: on Websites For The Frugal? · · Score: 1

A lot of these sites selling computer components dirt cheap (such as those found on pricewatch.com) are selling stuff of questionable origin. The easiest way to tell is by the warranty on the product. For example, motherboards from Intel or Asus come with 3 year warranties. I know that when you get them from a distributor like ASI, Ingram Micro, or Tech Data, you get that warranty (not that the general public can buy directly from a distributor...). But a lot of those resellers offer only 90 days to 1 year, through them only. I've been burned a couple of times from various pricewatch resellers, as have my friends. We simply go to the local computer shop and get what we need. Of course, I think a local shop selling legit stuff is the exception...but if this one does, I can't complain.

Actually most if not all notebooks are made by ODMs; you can trace major brand notebooks back to a few companies. Check out Compal, ChemBook, Clevo, and others like them.

  7. See Also... on Chernobyl...18 Years Later · · Score: 2, Informative

...the upcoming PC game, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. The developers of the game made a trip to Chernobyl and also took some photos of "The Zone" that are quite amazing as well. Supposedly they recreated about 60% of the real world for this game. How creepy...

Here is the link to the photos, and here is the game.

Both photos collections are unsettling. Just to think of what it must be like to experience Chernobyl, past or present, gives me chills. But is it not somehow fascinating to see our own technological marvels destroyed and decayed, as a sort of humbling reminder? Or am I the only one?
