Forgive me if this is a stereotype statement, but in my experience, women are much more likely to participate in a fantasy setting than a sci-fi setting. As a related example in entertainment, most women I know prefer Lord of the Rings over Star Wars.
As soon as you lose that segment of the populace, you're going to have problems. I know I'm less likely to jump into a sausagefest.
