That's ridiculous. Do all Christians really want to stone rape victims? Of course not. So how is this different from Muslims? Just because the Quran has an offensive (or many offensive) passages doesn't mean most Muslims use that passage in their daily life.

Here's a newsflash: most people don't read their religious texts and live by them word for word (as if that was possible). In fact most people takes bits and pieces and effectively throw out the stuff they don't like. If you don't believe me, do a study on how many Catholic women have used birth control.

I know it's fashionable to be opposed to everything RIAA on Slashdot but what is it that the Slashdot/Techie/Geek community wants? I want a system where people are allowed to listen to the music they choose without being put at risk of severe civil/criminal punishment. It's hard to consider a system that would accomplish this without it being pretty close to this system. (short of eliminating copyright completely)

And yes this is not exactly what EFF proposed but at least we're in the same ballpark now. We can negotiate a solution that is acceptable to all stakeholders because of this. We should be celebrating that we've gotten this far instead of complaining that it's not perfect.

That may be true at certain levels (federal, and some state) at the local level, government spending cannot get much lower without reducing the quality of services. We have this debate every year where I live and every year some area is marked for budget cuts because taxes don't keep up with increased costs (particularly health care).

We've gotten to the point where one city is not plowing the roads until a snow storm is completely done with. In Wisconsin, where storms can last a few days and we almost never cancel school or work not plowing roads is incredibly dangerous. I hope that the citizens of this city will say enough is enough (since I have to drive through it everyday) but I'm not getting my hopes up.

The honest truth is people want services without needing to pay for them. Unfortunately governments don't have the ability to provide services for free as much as people would like it to be the case.

I agree with the siblings; find a better source if you're going to claim the DRM/HD video issue caused the graphics companies problems. I'm not saying it has nothing to do with the problems; I just don't have the evidence necessary to make that conclusion.

I also think the argument is tough to believe. You're claiming Microsoft, in order to help out the RIAA/MPAA, made it nearly impossible to write graphics drivers for their OS? Ya the DRM is fucking stupid but is there any evidence that engineers at Microsoft had any worries about how this would affect the quality of the system as a whole?

I had a card that came out about 6 months before Vista. I think the most likely reason why Nvidia doesn't care that much about the quality of my experience is that Nvidia would prefer for me to just buy a new video card.

I wish I had mod points to use on the parent. The GPU companies (emphasis on Nvidia though) knew the Vista driver model 18 months prior to its release and they still couldn't come up with decent drivers on time or ever two years later. I finally gave up on Nvidia's shitty drivers when a driver update in June caused all AVI files to skip when emule was open. Combine that with Nvidia refusing to implement DVD anti-aliasing on hardware for Vista (something that they have in the XP drivers) I had had enough being a free beta tester for Nvidia. My new ATI card works just fine and I don't have to install additional crapware for its drivers. I don't plan on ever going back to Nvidia.

A bunch of parents went crazy saying they weren't teaching responsibility while the Administrator pointed out that they want kids to leave their system educated. If a child wants to learn and wants to learn enough that they'll take a test over, then I think its in everyone's best interest to teach them.
While I don't think our education system should totally ignore non-academic issues like responsibility, sharing and tolerance for others, I think its very reasonable for a school to focus on their primary goal of educating students.
