Oh yeah, and I forgot to say I run Slackware since the first time I got in touch with the marvelous world of Open Source.
What else...? Oh, I now use 'checkinstall' to create my own slackware packages (.tgz) and yes, slackware has a pretty good 'package managing system'. As already said it is called 'pkgtool'. To sum with it we have the slackpkg tool which makes our lives a bit more easier.
I personally like to build the software I use on my Linux boxes. However, nowadays I tend to compile it only once, create my own packages to use on a later installation or to spread the software on other workstations/servers which have the same hardware configuration as mine.
That speeds my workflow and I still have the confidence on the software I compiled.
Anyway, I think it is all a matter of "taste".
