  1. Missing the whole F***ing point on 4-Way Sun Fire V40z Reviewed · · Score: 0
What is it they say with monkeys and typewriters?

Try telling a director of a billion dollar company that you have no idea why the systems crashed but you're pretty sure they'll be back real soon. Now imagine the ton of doodoo landing on their head from the board that by right of delegation, lands on you.

You buy Sun because of three reasons - stability, performance and vendor support.

I'm sure I can get a nice generic system somewhere that can match performance at a better price. Who you gonna call when it goes bye bye? Ghostbusters?

That's why in a production environment you buy what works .

BTW, I do believe in playing with kit at home that's why I build my own machines (down to the case bolts) but at work I use stuff that works.

Anyone comparing Sun kit to Yachimoto or Whosawhatsit is missing the point.

Look it's really very simple. Each databases engine (read process) is capabale of running multiple threads (read connections/queries). In fact, each query can be split into multiple threads. So if I have 6 engines, I can run 6 threads concurrently. The idea being that an OS is generic and it created a virtual DB OS on top of your OS making 'better' choices that letting the OS choose which process gets CPU. So this engine binds very tightly to a CPU. In fact they work best when they don't share the CPU i.e. a dedicated DBMS server. So it is multithreaded but the process will bind to a CPU (this can be enforced on some OS).

I can understand people who want to fly but can't afford a PPL but I am have worries. All the terrorism stuff is nonsense from GWB/John Ashcroft but what about cluttered airspace around even small fields. It's bad enough when you have gliders/NORDO in the air. Now multiply them... I wonder if they'll be forced to put a Mode S transponder in them?

  5. Tactical Force on Army Discusses MMO Troop Training Sim · · Score: 2, Interesting

Totally agree with this point. Read Starship troopers (not the movie) to get a better grip on this.

The point about training your tactical force is to teach them to apply the amount of force needed the situation.

Ongoing training of this nature is what the armed forces doing when they are not on Operations. They are called Exercises.

Now for operational purposes the preparation phase becomes even more important. The more important the objective, the better the model. I know when the SAS were training to pull hostages out of Lebanon, they used floorplans and real buildings.

Doing this training virtually is just another way to do this. IMHO it would only augment existing training.
