  1. Re:Why is CC doing this when they own part of XM? on ClearChannel Complains About XM, Sirius Radio · · Score: 5, Interesting

What CC wants is for the FCC to regulate the content on satellite radio. They threw in XM because it has name recognition, despite their stake in it (which I believe stands around 30%), but what I believe is part of their true objective is FCC regulation, which means they could potentially have a controlling interest, or even flat out own, both major players. Remember, ClearChannel isn't only radio, they have those innumerable billboards on the road, they own a great number (65%-70%+) of concert venues in the U.S.

For those who have poor opinions of Microsoft's business practices, ClearChannel's doings are roughly similar, except they want to control not just what software you run, but also the computer on which you use said software, where said computer can be used and what the software will stop you from doing if it doesn't think what you're doing with it is decent.

I do, and I never died. Granted, I never actually "battled" either - too convuluted and time consuming for me. I just kept track of the last 3-4 places I was and went back if the situation wasn't to my liking. *g*

"You can't even 'quit' RealPlayer without being assaulted with pop-up ads begging you to buy the so-called 'Gold' version."

Unlike Apple's Quicktime, which assaults you to buy the full version every time it starts up. No "Do not show me this again" or "Never" option and no way to navigate to the only possible option - "Later"

  5. What will it take? on Friedman on Linux Desktop Expectations · · Score: 3, Interesting

"A day doesn't go by when I don't talk to a Fortune 1000 customer from the financial services market, automotives or others that are not looking at dipping their feet into the Linux desktop." With all the tools, utilities and applications currently available, why isn't Linux on the desktop happening already, or why aren't they jumping in rather than just "dipping their feet"? Is there something missing? Do we need THE killer app to be created which would run solely on Linux (which would basically require it to be closed source to stay on top, and difficult/involved enough to duplicate it on Windows to wait around for a port/clone)? Is it perhaps that larger companies are contractually obligated to fulfill order quotas for equipment or application licenses (MS Licensing v6 anyone?) that breaching the contract would be too financially devastating to make a conversion worthwhile or financially sound?
