  1. Re:Ask Burning Man? on Temporary Wireless Service For An Outdoors Event? · · Score: 1

Tachyon sucks..I'm a satellite tech and thats the worst system ive ever seen...If you are gonna do this and you're gonna have more than 10+ users at this location you definately need to try to get a different inbound..Starband and DirecWay both boast 400k/sec speeds, but thats downlink only..On average, both systems send about 8-32k/sec up, depending on packet sizes, delay (which is 800-1000ms), etc.... The DW6000 and the Starband 480s both have integrated routers built-in so you can just attach on a wireless router /w broadband support (Linksys or even *EWW* Microsofts MN-520/720 have been successfully used to do this).. But, like i said, the more users you put on the network the more strain on the satellite you're going to receive.. If I were you, Id try to get ahold of Spacenet or their sister company Connexstar (www.connexstar.com)..Yes, they are still both satellite based under 1.0W transmit, but they can offer better bandwidth than both starband and direcway (estimates ive heard are as high as 400k up /1.5mbps down).. Hope this helps

Vonage has POTS numbers, thus why you dont have to be a Vonage customer to get ahold of someone using their system. I looked into getting Vonage awhile back just because I dont like my local POTS provider and my cable connection has very few outages. I like the idea of not having any 'real' taxes on the service. Since Vonage does use existing infrastructure to run, I dont see why Vonage is even BEING taxed. Where I live they tax every service that comes into your home from the local utility. As far as Im concerned Vonage should be considered a 'service', since you're already being taxed on the rest of your utilities, whether it be DSL/T1/Cable modem, what right do they have to double-tax it just because they are a cheaper service..Either way uncle Sam's getting his money, better yet lets tax all the bastards in Congress that continue to raise their salaries every year to do a whole lotta nothing.

How is this 'hardened PHP' going to be any more secure than just PHP? I mean, yes, I can see where it has a few extra checks and built-in features that just basically transfers a few security bugs in other apps to the compiler and out of the script, but will this cause new programmers to just omit problems of the past out of their scripts?? I'm not saying that this isnt a good idea, but I just can see scripters leaving some variable checks out of the script and still leaving it vulnerable under the new 'hPHP'... Just a thought..

Well, im glad they finally did something..I just hope that the guy that designed this crap in meters remembered to program the craft in meters... Dont need a repeat of the mars lander a few years ago when the thing hit Mars at a constant velocity of 225mph..WHOOPS, there goes 200 million......Alas, another 420 project..
