  1. Poetic Justice... on CompUSA Closing More Than 50 Percent of Stores · · Score: 1
My how things change. For years Apple was shelling out big dough to get shelf space for software, machines, etc. at CompUSA stores. They still got stuck back in the corner of most stores with half the machines left in unworkable condition. The people on the floor knew nothing about Macs and most treated people looking for anything Mac related as if they had a virus. It was obvious, from top management on down, that no matter what Apple did to facilitate sales, CompUSA could care less about Apple products and they didn't seem to think there was any profit in selling them. Apple was pretty much forced into doing things differently - thus the genesis of the "Apple Store".

Fast forward to today. It can be tough at times to even move around in an Apple Store with all the people. In just a few years, the number of Apple Stores has jumped to over 170 with more being built constantly. So to hear that CompUSA is having problems and is down to 103 stores seems a bit like....well....poetic justice.

Yep - that clinches it. EFF gets all upset because some of their Al Qaeda buddies (contributing members themselves, no doubt) can't have private phone conversations. Not a penny from me....

  3. Apple's Back! on Are Media Writers Biased Towards Apple? · · Score: 3, Insightful

This article by Dvorak represents something of a huge milestone for Apple. It was just a few years ago that the media was all over Apple - in a bad way! Everything that you read about Apple indicated that it was a sinking ship (or already sunk). I was at Apple's World Wide Developer's Conf. just after Jobs came back to Apple, and he said that step #1 for Apple was to stop the bad press (which he admitted was well deserved). Step #2 to empower developers (gotta say that at a WWDC), and step #3 was to produce great products. He's been sticking to the plan. The bad press slowed down, then for a couple of years you didn't hear anything about Apple in the press (most thought they had gone away). Now Dvorak has confirmed that they're back - in a big way. It's been an amazing turnaround!! If I recall, Dvorak was one of the ones in the media leading the charge in smearing the Apple - only difference between now and then is that back then he had lots of company and he was lov'n it. Now he's pretty much alone, so all he can do is whine.
