Please list the things that Walmart has done that benefits society.
I can line up a whole list oF American business owners who are out of business thanks to Walmart. Walmart supports dumping of goods on US markets from China. Hardly patriotic don't you think? In fact, Walmart was on the side of China when an American electronics firm (Thompsons I believe) raised the issue with the FTC.
Then there's Walmart stance that workers should borrow from their 401K plans to pay for health insurance.
O.K. Nixon, way to be completely ignorant of the whole M.S. anti-trust case.
I'm sick to death of ignorant fools who can't be bothered to do a little research to understand a topic. Then they come up with the most asinine analogies to prove their ignorant point. Why don't you do us all a favor and shut the fuck up and do some research before you spout off some half baked idea.
I'll give you a little help - the word is monopoly.
"There will be a good deal of shaking out. There will be new modes of distributing music - more diversity and more competition. But technological innovations continually cause change, ever since Edison. The industry has to change and it is changing."
That quote pretty much sums it up how stupid he really is. He claims that P2P destroyed artists profits from record sales but then says technology will create more "diversity" and "competition," which I translate into more profits. So which is it Mr. Wizard?
The real data shows that file sharing has not hurt record sales. The real data shows that output of new albums has declined over the past several years. The real data shows that CD prices have remained at roughly the same price as there were back in the 80s, i.e., high.
Thus, high prices, coupled with no new product would equal sagging profits for artists. Hell even his own research showed that artists latest albums are crap and not many people want to buy them but throw together a "greatest hits" concert and the lemmings will flock to it. If the artists would put out an album that PEOPLE WOULD BUY then they would not have to charge high prices for concerts.
I feel no sympathy for these artists. David Bowie has NOT put out an interesting album in a couple decades! The last interesting thing he did was a project called Tin Machine and they only released one good album. Besides, whatever happened to his Bowie Stock....
It does not take 8 hours to install Oracle. If you read the instructions it takes, maybe an hour! I've install Oracle 10g on an UNSOPPORTED Linux OS - Suse 9.2, not SLES, the regular distro. That's the 64 bit Oracle 10g version on the 64 bit Suse 9.2 version, no less!!
No problems what so ever. See the thing with Oracle, YOU HAVE TO READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. Anyone with a brain can figure this out. It's not a point and click MS install. But once you have covered the bases - it's simple.
Look we already know how good ro how bad these processors are. Do a search on Apple's new iMacs that ship with them and see real world tests. A MacWorld article takes Intela and Apple to task. They are faster compared to the G4 processors but not by alot, as claimed and on certain tasks, not faster at all.
It is not faster than the G5 period! Let alone AMD's dual core processors. Am I not mistaken but the FX processor is a single core processor. Hardly a comparison.
You may be saving some heat and power but you are not gaining in processing capability.
"If you're lifestyle is such that random photo ops don't appear frequently, then fine, buy yourself a phone without a camera "
You obviously haven't been following this thread closely. It's becoming harder to buy a cell phone WITHOUT a camera option included. Alot of people don't care and don't want one. What is awful about all this is consumers are being forced to accept options they don't want!
Your post is one incredible troll. Insightful! Please.
If had bothered to come down from your ivory tower and read the blog, you would understand the problem was bogus registrars appearing at the last minute with many being THE SAME COMPANY! They were bogus because they were not real registrars but rather companies squating on a domain name. If the EURID had bothered to do a background check on these companies, they could have prevented the abuse of the system. EURID can still fix the problem but they show no willingness to do so.
"Which brings me to what I've always wondered about Christians/Catholics...why do they have such an insistance on believing in a literal interpretation of the Bible? To me, the Bible seems to be more of a historical political document aimed at unifying the Roman empire, rather than an exact historical accounting. As such, the events/stories/wisdom contained within it are delivered in a fashion that facilitates internalizing its messages, lessons, etc. Yet to suggest this to people who are deeply religious usually results in a response equivalent to if you had told them that God does not exist. I've rarely seen anyone capable of separating the bible from their faith in God and Christ."
Woah, woah woah. Don't be blaming the Catholics on this one. It's those damn born agains and fundamentalist baptists that spread this stuff.
Leave the Catholics to their Virgin birth story!
FYI Catholics don't follow a literal interpretation of the bible. Hell alot of them don't follow what the pope says.
Good god man read the freackin' article and do a little research about the topic!!
The Telecoms want to double dip here, they want to charge content providers TWICE!! Hello earth to moron. Right now, Google pays an for internet access and I pay for Internet access. Under the new model proposed by the telecoms, Google and I would both pay for internet access but then Google would pay AGAIN to allow people to have unfettered access to their site!!
It's as simple as that. That's not market economics!!
And hey if the Telecoms are allowed to do that, then I want the tax revenue we lost pack when the Telecoms cried saying they needed Tax relief and subsidies to run Fiber to people's houses, which they didn't do!!!
"IMAGINE a world where wars are fought over the internet; where TV broadcasts and newspaper reports are designed by the military to confuse the population; and where a foreign armed power can shut down your computer, phone, radio or TV at will."
Imagine? We don't have to imagine, we are already living it!
The irony is, it's not the military that's waging a ware of dis-information, it's our own government waging a war of dis-information on us! Examples: Terror Alerts, WMDs, Climate Change, Evolution...Contradictory statements are being released by government officials. The government rebrands military operations: The War on Terror, The Global War on Terror, The Long War, or The Global War on Extremism...
This is indeed an interesting time in which we live.
Yes this was reported earlier, though I do not remember if Microsoft "formally" requested help from the U.S. An official from the DOJ was telling the EU that they should treat Microsoft fairly and that official held up the U.S.'s Anti-trust case as an example on how to treat Microsoft.
Thankfully the EU, so far, has told the U.S. (in some many words), to go F@$# itself. Rolling over is not the way to treat Microsoft. The EU has legitimate gripes with MS. MS failed to deliver documentation explaining one of their APIs, with which program can be made to work with Windows. This is gross negligence on MS's part.
The irony is it takes a foreign governmental body to discipline a mis-behaving U.S. company.
Oh Teddy Roosevelt where are you when we need you!
"One can easily argue our national priorities are considerably out of whack"
What is the relevance of this statement? The topic of dicussion is NASA's budget. It sounds like you are apologizing for NASA.
"But it's easy to argue that the proposed projects do have value."
Bingo, you are apologizing for NASA.
"NASA, while far from perfect, does appear to be struggling to improve and is making some progress towards that end."
WTF! Can you site evidence of this? Wasn't that the whole point of the article, assuming you read it in the first place. Let me refresh your memory, "NASA's new budget blows it." Hmm...kind of sounds like NASA is NOT making progress. The article goes on to illustrate examples of wasteful spending, e.g., the moon base project. He also gives evidence of what the costs would be and why a moon base would not help a mars mission.
Where's the progress again?
Then you go off on some rant about Healthcare costs:
"Of greater interest to me is comparing NASA funding to other things our society does. Back in October the Washington Post proposed canceling Bush's Vision for Space Exploration, and cited the need for health care for poor children as a worthier alternative. What few people recognize is that health care spending in the U.S. is 100 times the NASA budget"
I have no idea what the relevance of that statement is about. Are you saying, since Americans spend 100 time the NASA budget, whatever NASA wastes money on is no big deal?
Wow what logic!
"It would be nice if other American activities -- for example education -- showed the same kind of work at improvement."
Amazing, holding up NASA as a model for improvement. You surely live in Fantasy land. Good luck with that!
It's **3** years old. Gotta love up-to-date current information. Again the so called study, sponsored by the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA), did not have data to support their argument. It contained PREDICTIONS which they hoped would come true.
Example:
"In the software and services area, the economy will create 516,000 jobs over the next five years; of those jobs, 272,000 will go offshore and 244,000 will remain onshore."
Is this happening? That's 48,000 jobs per year. Are we currently creating 48,000 jobs per year? Are these permenant positions or temp positions? How much do they pay?
Still waiting for a "respectable" economist to support your claim.
It's nice to see people are doing their usual bang up job of actually reading the article before commenting.
"The study cites estimates that between two to three percent of IT jobs will be lost annually to lower-wage developing countries through the process known as offshoring. But it said the U.S. IT sector's overall growth should outpace that loss of jobs, expanding opportunities for those trained in fields such as software architecture, product design, project management and IT consulting."
ESTIMATE, ESTIMATE losses and SHOULD, SHOULD outpace. That's a big difference between estimating numbers and stating real numbers. THEY ARE GUESSING!! They don't know what will happen. They are speculating it won't be so bad but he have no idea if it will be so.
Oh and the increase in wages, 2-5 percent, is simply COST OF LIVING! That's not real growth.
Nice job thinking things are improving when they are not.
FYI, no RESPECTABLE economist thinks off-shoring is a good idea.
The rule is for FEDERAL CONTRACTORS!!! Hello, can anyone read around here. This does not apply to NON-FEDERAL CONTRACTORS. Again, READ THE PDF. It's prefereable to having morons posting comments.
It amazes me the number of times I see posts about the futility of a CS degree in its' ability in getting you a job in the IT industry. I don't suppose people bother reading the classifieds anymore but most full-time postions, that pay anything, require a CS degree. Or put another way, READ THE BLOODY CLASSIFIEDS TO DETERMINE WHAT SUCH AND SUCH A COMPANY REQUIRES!!
Why on earth would you put any stock in what some pin-head says on his web-blog or what have you. This moron is already employed you are not. Do you want a job? Then go out into industry and ask them what they require. Don't ask jerk-wads on slashdot or what have you.
Back in my day when I was in high school they had these things called "Career Fairs," where people from different industries would come and you could talk to them and ask them what they do, what's it like and what kind of education/training was required for their position.
IT'S CALLED RESEARCH!
This is high school guidance counseling 101.
So yes maybe a CS degree is not required for certain types of IT jobs. Yes maybe some companies will hire you without a CS degree. But you are not going to KNOW THAT unless you ASK THE COMPANY doing the hiring!! Or better yet READ THE FREAKIN' JOB-ADD!!!
You are an utter moron. Why are you willing to believe that 50% of papers published are incorrect? Because of this paper or because you have some data to back it up. Unless you can back it up your belief is worthless.
How eactly is it LOGICAL that for a new paper to be right the previous paper must be wrong? Was the new paper refuting something in the old one? If so was it sucessful?
Boy you are such the troll.
