  1. He picked the wrong title on Professional Excel Development · · Score: 5, Insightful
Had the book been called "Professional OpenOffice Development", this crowd would have fallen all over themselves praising it.

It gets real tiring listening to all the folks that couldn't say a nice word about a MS product if you paid them. Guess what folks... there are millions and millions of people that use Excel in very sophisticated ways. Why? Because it works well enough. With the help of this book, maybe it will work even better.

There are many ways to skin a cat. You haven't got a lock on God's One True Programming Language.

  2. Re:Gas Prices on NASA Postpones Shuttle Launch · · Score: 1
According to http://www.nasa.gov/returntoflight/system/system_E T.html, the ET holds 143,060 gallons of LOX and 282,066 gallons of liquid H2 for a total of 526,126 gallons.

If the Earth's circumference is 25,000 miles, then a typical 7 day mission should travel about 2,800,000 miles on a single tank. This gives us about 5.3 MPG.

But wait... it gets worse! If you add in the SRBs, the total fuel consumption is even larger. The SRBs contain > 1,000,000 pounds of solid fuel. I've no idea how many gallons this is but its a bit more than your average Hummer burns up going to the Safeway.

The Shuttle's fuel economy isn't that great but its 0-17000 times are outstanding. :)

  3. Re:The dedication turned me off. on Linux Application Development · · Score: 3, Insightful

I looked on Websters to find the definition of "proselytization". Turns out that it means "to induce someone to convert to one's own religious faith."

So Mr. Johnson was not proselytizing. There was nothing in his dedication that attempted to sway you to his belief system. His grandmother may have been but even that is debatable since she was simply leading by example.

I picked up a number of computer books from my shelf and about half of them had dedications. Some mentioned "love", one mentioned "light of my life". All very untechnical. Do these offend you too? All I can read into your complaint is that you are incredibly sensitive to the idea that someone may discuss something you don't want to hear about.
