Lucent (and its relatives) have been in decline for decades. It was never the technology, but the ability to turn the technology into viable products.
I worked there for years. Every good idea in the past 25 years had been developed by someone there and abandoned, leaving the market to Sun, Cisco and a host of other agressive startups.
A lot of great talent was wasted there.
