Basically they can't search you unless they charge you with shoplifting. I'm not sure to what extent "detaining" means, but here is a quote:

I personally have never had a problem ignoring the security people and just walking out. NOTE: this does not apply to membership stores like Costco since with Costco you agreed to the search in your membership agreement. Do not try just walking by the security person at Costco."
