  1. Re:Why do they bother? on Odeon Orders Takedown Of Copycat Site · · Score: 1

Actually, it said clearly on the first page that it wasn't the official Odeon site (and why, if I remember correctly). I used it regularly, until now that is. 'Tis a shame...

  2. [Ah've] already Got one - almost on Linux Laptop w/ 3.5" Disk, USB, and No Hard Drive? · · Score: 1

Well, actually, the Jornada (forget the #) is the spouse's now, but it is a sublaptop, a tad smaller than my Fujitsu P1120, and has no HD - used CF disks for that function. The OS was on a removeable chip, and there was talk of building the chip with Linux instead. Would have been very cool, but never happened. It's quite old now (no real USB support, alas, and doesn't like CF cards bigger than about 24MB) but still going strong.

  4. Fried a processor *removing* the heatsink on What Was Your Worst Computer Accident? · · Score: 1

Had recently upgraded my Athlon processor, had a bear of a time installing the heatsink, decided to get a new one. Now, wisdom would suggest I wait until I replace the proc befor eremoving the troublesome heatsink but noooo....

There was some trouble removing the old heatsink but the new one went in like a breeze. Fired up the system, ran for almost a minute, then crashed. After that, deadsville. At first I thought the new heatsink hadn't made good contact, till I looked closely, and noticed the core was missing a noticibly large chunk of one corner. I still keep the CPU- visibly crushed center on one side, nice burn mark on the bottom - as a reminder to be as careful removing the heatsink as I am installing it.

I have widely divergent interests. I read: Maximum PC PC World Western Horseman Equus Maximum PC is an excellent computer mag, I generally do read it cover to cover each month.
