  1. Marketing genius on Kill Bill, IBM vs Microsoft · · Score: 3, Insightful

If IBM sells Linux as well as they have OS/2 and VisualAge products, I don't see how Microsoft can lose. IBM has a bad track record of poor marketing strategy. Hopefully they'll finally get it right this time...

  2. And if it's captured? on CMU's Snooping Robot Headed for Iraq · · Score: 2, Interesting

This is definitely a neat little gizmo, that will help gather information that would otherwise be hard to collect.

If the Iraqi hostiles capture one of them, though, I would be willing to lay down cash that they will sell it to a US-hostile entity - I would guess Al Qaeda or possibly Red China.

Hope it's rigged to destroy itself via remote control...

  3. Re:Maybe I'm Getting Old on Future for Web Standards Pondered · · Score: 1

If Microsoft wants to wait to release a new browser then this merely opens a nice hole for increased market penetration.

While waiting for Windows 95 to come out (and it was already quite late), IBM had a golden opportunity with OS/2. They could have heavily marketed it, sold more copies, and given Miscrosoft something to remember. Instead, they waited until Windows 95 came out, then pushed it when it was too late. IMHO, OS/2 was better than Windows 95. The sheep will wait for the next release of Windows if there isn't a marketing push to shepherd them in another direction. The same holds true for browsers. If it's not being actively pushed, a new browser will not grab hold with the unwashed masses.

This shouldn't be a problem with privacy concerns. First, they had a judge willing to authorize the tap. Second, phone taps have been in use a long time. The biggest difference here is that they were tracking data, not voice. It's not a revolutionary change to the way things are done, it's just a technology being used in a very slightly different way.

  5. A good use on Things You Can Do With A Giant Fresnel Lens · · Score: 3, Interesting

Maybe not very practical, but it might make a good paint remover. I have seen work crews remove paint from wood surfaces with a heat gun that looked like a big hairdryer, so I would think this type of lens would be helpful for stripping paint off metal surfaces such as water towers and so forth.

  6. Bad Movie on Hayabusa Earth Flyby Swings Toward Asteroid · · Score: 1

When faced with a similar problem, the European Rosetta mission alternatively will harpoon the surface to hang on while also touching down on another small-mass asteroid.

This gives me a mental image of the scene in Mission to Mars, where the crew snagged the satellite that was conveniently in orbit around Mars (and crash-landed it to the surface). Although not an identical scenario, this really is the stuff of sci-fi movies, in this particular case.

  7. Re:Keep it to canned goods on Internet Grocery Shopping Slowly Gaining Ground · · Score: 1

You make an interesting point. However, not all butchers and produce managers aspire to please their customers as you suggest you personally do (that's an indirect compliment). I used to work in a grocery store years ago, and we were told how to arrange meat and produce so that it was most appealing to the eye, hiding blemishes. I have lost count as to how many times I have since been to the store to select a roast and get a meaty top with a thick layer of fat hidden underneath. While you personally might be appalled, others look at that as charging more for less usable product, and therefore good business. Would you want to give someone like that a blank check?

  8. Keep it to canned goods on Internet Grocery Shopping Slowly Gaining Ground · · Score: 2, Insightful

Otherwise, you are relying on someone else to select meat and produce for you.
