I believe IRC deserves a continent. Or perhaps an ocean?

  3. Re:Is this better? on Fujitsu Moves Towards Linux · · Score: 1

To my understanding, the server is available for Solaris, but the client is only available for Win95/98/NT.

    Doesn't help much, does it?

  4. Is this better? on Fujitsu Moves Towards Linux · · Score: 1

At our department, the only reason NT's are still on every desktop is TeamWare. All the work are done on Unix (Sun) boxes and 99% of the complaints are because of the NT. TeamWare manages to provide more than its fair share of the problems: we've found it to be slow, unreliable, resource heavy and complicated. And that's only the "client" side. The server operations (like mail) seem to be even worse.

I very strongly suspect, that changing the platform will not make users any happier. Atleast in a very large network, TeamWare is lousy. Try it if its free, but don't pay for it.

Just ran across an interesting patch from China. It can be set to prevent files and directories from being modified. Even by root. Look for it as "lids" on Freshmeat.

On the whole, I'm looking forward to seeing India (traditional Unix country) and China getting into the Linux race. The potential of qualified coders is enormous!

Does anybody know of a practical method to implement quotas on only parts of a partition? I'd hate to have to repartition a running Linux system... Thanks for any ideas!

  7. Re:Tech is all around (some of) us on Finns Build a Virtual Helsinki · · Score: 1

I think the key issue here is the time of deployment and general acceptance. The level of technology might not be that different, but the time it takes to become a household tool is a lot faster.

For mobile systems, there are a few reasons why this is true. The first has to be Nokia who is working closely with local operators to bring out new technology early. Imagine a nationwide test lab! The second can be traced back to the early years of the GSM system: from the very beginning we had two nationwide operators competing furiously. And before GSM, the nation was already covered with the NMT-network...

As to the Orwellian nightmares, at least for the time being, we can switch these toys off and enjoy the forests and lakes that cover most of the land araa ;)
