I don't know. Sometimes when people say that, they point to a particular person as an example of a great programmer, who happens to be old. And I say, "yeah, but he was probably an awesome programmer when he was young, too" -- and so far, that's been the case.
So I'm not sure sure that it has to do with age, but it has to do with the fact that a lot of the so called "old" programmers joined in industry before the Internet boom, before it was a great job, or their mom and dad said to them, "you should do something with computers" because it's a career. Many of the old programmers became programmers because it was their passion to create software.
